So I just got Internet installed at my new apartment, and so far I hate, hate, hate it. For some reason, I have to hit refresh for just about every new website I go to an average of about 3 times before the page actually comes up.

    Is this typical?

Also, there was no cable jack in either of the bedrooms so they just hooked up the TV and left. (my wife was home and didn't question them) Whatever happened to adding a jack for you if you need it. Don't companies do that anymore?

So far I'm pretty dissatisfied with the service. I was kind of wondering what other people's experience has been.

That sucks, I've had broadband through Timewarner and have had zero problems in 3 years. MUCH better than dsl was.

I've also been running via cable through Time Warner and the speed blows away the past DSL connections I had. Love it.

I always hear horror stories about TW but I've used them for about 6 years now and I've only had one problem.

I was getting some disconnects when I first had it installed. I called them and they tested the line and told me that the signal wasn't where it should be. He sent someone out within a few days.

He said that my cable splitter was bad. I had a splitter in the wall and half the signal was going to the TV in the living room and the other half was going to the computer in my bedroom. This was cutting my speed in half.

He installed a new splitter and from then on I had no problems whatsoever. They also didn't charge me anything for the visit.

I don't have any problem with T/W broadband, and I've had it for years as well. Maybe it's because I live in Austin. I've heard some stories about T/W in Houston from friends and relatives that make their service sound very uneven there. Some have no problems, and others have them far too often.

Heck, we even switched to their digital phone service, which has worked out great. When someone calls, it displays who it is on the TV, if it's on. We've got HD DVR boxes, and great reception from them. With shelling out for RR, cable, the HD DVR boxes, the phone service, every premium channel they have, except for Playboy, on demand channels, the sports package- to get NBATV, and League Pass every year, it adds up!!!

I had this same problem a few years ago. It was my router going bad. Got a new one and it was completely fixed. Actually it was TWC customer service that identified the problem for me. You using a router?

I switched from Qwest DSL to Time Warner when I moved last March and it seems like Time Warner is as reliable and a whole lot faster than DSL. I've had a few outages but so did Qwest DSL. For some reason though a friend of mine who has Time Warner has had a ton of problems with outages. I don't think its his router because he has had that replaced. One thing I've heard about cable is that the amount of people on a line using it affects its speed so I'm wondering if that might also affect availability of service. Might it be that you might have neighbors who are heavily using the same line as you?

I've had TW for 3 years now, I've never had DSL, so I can't really compare, but my TW experience isn't as good as some others. It's really fast 80% of the time, but a whole lot of times it would just die on me. I can't connect or anything. It's a pain in the ass, especially when I first got it cause I didn't know how to fix it. I know now but that results in me having to disconnect the router and stuff.

    Straight from the horses mouth:

    1. Most apartments complexes don't want TW installing new outlets in apartments. If your apartment complex allowed it, and you did want a new jack, it's an extra 18.75 at the time of install, or 29.95 if it's a new trip.

    2. Some areas appear to have problems every freaking day, while others (like we see in this thread, and myself) have had no problems in years. Don't know why it is just yet, but you can imagine some of the calls I've had. "Your service is the worst ever, how do you guys stay in business" next call "Wow, I've had you guys for 6 years and this is the first time my internet has ever gone down *reset router* WOW it works THANKS".

    3. Call tech support (just don't do it during the day while I'm working ;), Just kidding...maybe) and have them check out what's going on.

    How's Verizon btw Dave?

I had a couple of problems with TW service in the beginning. As another poster mentioned, one problem was related to a sub-standard splitter in my house that the technician replaced. But my overall complaint with the speed of my service turned out to be on my end, not TW's. I installed the registry patches on speedguide.net (see: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php ), and they made a HUGE difference in my system's performance.

NOTE: The patches referenced above alter your registry. I take no responsability if they screw up your computer. Proceed at your own risk. ;)

Run that test, if you're getting under 2mb, call TW. If you're getting above, then...well, call anyway, but may want to shy away from letting them know about the 2mb thing ;).

    absolutely agree

I had dsl service at the old office, adn its speeds werent even close to my cable line.

Had only a few disconnects or problems of any kind in the 2+ years I have had it.

seems like you have a DNS problem...something in your connection. possibly router/NIC misconfiguration.

Hey Deckard, do you have problems with your HD DVR locking up on the guide when you are trying to see what is on the "movie channels"? Almost every time I go to the 400s+ the damn box will freeze and I have to reset the damn thing.. I have called TW out 2 times and I have switched the boxes out too, I was finally told that there is a problem with the boxes that which TW knows about, but they don’t have a solution for it yet.. Do you have the same problem in Austin??

It's with all the 8300s, or at least certain 8300s, but it affects HD and standard def as well. Check under your box, if it says Rev. 2.4, there should have been an update to your box tuesday morning that (allegedly) fixes that issue.

I have had RR for 3 years, love it, but for some reason Time Warner hasn't charged me for it in the last 6 months. :)

I was one of the first to get Roadrunner in the Heights. It was SCREAMING fast when I first got it - I had Napster running 24-7 on it. :D

Other than the tech that didn't know how to install the card when I first signed up, the only other problem I ever had with TW was when my modem went obsolete and I had to switch to a newer model. I have more problems with my digital cable than I have with broadband.

I had the same splitter problem ima had, but it was affecting my cable reception. I was using old regular cable splitters and they couldn't handle the signal, so some channels came in pixleated. Something about the ohms the splitter could take. I had TW run a seperate line with no cuts in the cable for my modem at our current home and I haven't had a problem with it since.
