lnik (8/01/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - There's a big change coming to nearly every cable customer in Houston. Time-Warner Cable is leaving the market and Comcast is taking its place. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also on ABC13.com: Send news tips | RSS | ABC13 E-lert | Info mentioned on air | Search abc13.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was an internal Time-Warner email that alerted us to the coming change. Time-Warner is leaving the Houston market and Comcast Cable is replacing it. According to the division president of Time-Warner Cable, the company is giving control of the Houston market to Comcast under an agreement reached back in 1985. The two companies have been swapping markets recently after closing a deal to buy up bankrupt Adelphia Cable. The Houston cable swap will not take place until January 1, 2007 at the earliest. So what does this mean for you? According to the email, Time-Warner will "continue conducting business as usual, providing excellent products and services to our customers." As for rates, services, and channel lineups, we will know more about that Wednesday. We've been told to expect a formal announcement from Time-Warner Wednesday morning. According to the Time-Warner email, the Comcast change must first be approved by federal regulators. We will have much more on this story Wednesday on Eyewitness News. For more on the change, visit Jeff Ehling's consumer blog by clicking here. Would this effect my cable/rr service?
i hope it affects it by making it better. i cant stand RR. the damn cable light will go out at random. usually when playing poker online. or when im playing on xbox live. its really annoying.
Wow, i almosted got a job over there last month, but went to Verizon Wireless' Wireless Data Tech Support department Hopefully everybody I know at Time Warner, including Mig, will still have their job :/
AHHH wtf is comcast ive only heard it a couple of times Does this mean different channel numbers?? I can't stand that.. Ihave to write them down next to the TV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comcast "In late 2006 Comcast will switch market areas with Time Warner Cable, its biggest loss will be the Dallas market to Time Warner Cable in exchange for Time Warner's North Louisiana's market (Shreveport and Monroe, Lousiana)."
I didn't think Time Warner was that bad. They charge outrageous prices, but its not like we have much choice here in houston.
Clutchfans with the inside scoop again. I work there and I didn't find out til I came in this thread. Few minutes later I check my email and there it is. *reads*
Well, Dallas is doing the opposite... http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/stories/072506dnbustimewarner.15aa601.html Time Warner hopes to ease pain of shift Comcast e-mail clients will feel the transition most of all, exec says 08:09 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 By TERRY MAXON / The Dallas Morning News Time Warner Cable takes over Comcast Corp.'s cable systems in Dallas, Plano, Arlington and other North Texas cities on Aug. 1. And for Comcast customers who have its e-mail service, that means they'll have to change e-mail addresses. Robert V. Moel, president of Time Warner Cable's North Texas division, said the company is trying to make the changeover as painless as possible. Also Online Time Warner exec stays tuned in to viewers "Change is very difficult for most people," he said. "We recognize that. So we wanted to make the change as simple and easy as possible." But the bottom line: "There will have to be a change." Last year, Time Warner Cable and Comcast struck a deal to divvy up the properties of bankrupt Adelphia Communications Corp. As part of the agreement, they also swapped cable franchises in a number of areas. On July 13, the Federal Communications Commission OK'd the transfers. Time Warner Cable, which already had more than 2 million customers in Texas, picks up another 600,000 with the addition of Dallas, Arlington, Plano, Mesquite and all other Comcast systems in North Texas. As quickly as possible, Mr. Moel said, the customers who have high-speed Internet service will be changed to Time Warner's Road Runner service, with a Road Runner e-mail address. Time Warner Cable is setting up a new e-mail domain, tx.rr.com for e-mail addresses. Mr. Moel said Comcast users will be able to keep their current user names before the "@" symbol, with tx.rr.com after the symbol. For example, john@comcast .net would become john@tx.rr .com. For a year, e-mail with the old Comcast address will automatically be forwarded to users' new Road Runner address, he said. In addition, Time Warner Cable has created a software wizard to help users change their e-mail information on their computers. The TWC-Comcast swap will close Monday, with Time Warner Cable taking over the North Texas franchises the next day. The new owner will soon replace the Comcast name with its own, Mr. Moel said. "We're going to be almost immediately changing the names on doors, on the vehicles," he said. "We're having all the name badges produced." So it's going to happen "pretty quickly, as quickly as we can do it." Time Warner Cable is keeping Comcast's 1,500 area employees, and intends to hire some more, he said. "We've got a different theory of operation than Comcast," he said. "There are some jobs that they outsourced, and we're going to bring those in-house. We're going to add about 100 call center representatives, for example." --------------------------- Enjoy Comcast's fast download speeds, but their HIGH ASS PRICING!
We have Comcast here in Chicago: the costs are comparable (Comcast might be slightly more expensive) but good god is the service atrocious. Might just be a Chicago thing but I've heard similiar things about other markets. Good luck.
I'm not sure I like this since I'm a timewarner junkie but I have one question. Does Comcast have the NFL network? Timewarner doesn't and I want it.
wtf? i just extended my service for another year. TWC has always been excellent along with RR. i hope not to see any jacked up prices.
How will it change RR? Will we still be able to get high speed cable with Comcast? Sounds like they need to de-regulate the whole damn thing like they did with phone's a few years back.
It is not a Chicago thing only. Before reading your post, I was thinking it was a DC thing. I'm now living in the DC area and using Comcast. I've made about 15 apointments (4 hours window) to fix two problems with my cable. No technicians show up for about half of the appointments. When a technician do show up, the chances are he cannot really do much because he only bring a few simple tools such as a cable cutter. The technican had very little information about my cable problem from their computer systems even though several technicans had visited my home already. My experiences with Time Warner in Sugar Land was much better.
