At this point, given the available free agent talent, would it be prudent to consider bringing back David Wesley for the vet min? Say, a 1yr, maybe 2 at team option? He doesn't make us longer or more athletic, but he knows the system, plays hardnosed ball and makes his shots at a pretty good clip when healthy. He also provides good veteran presence and leadership. He was injured part of last season, and playing way too many minutes, so his production wasn't quite up to snuff. I think he probably caught a rougher shake from the fanbase than he would have, had the team had been healthy. However, I think given our rapidly disappearing roster, and the dwindling options, he's definitely worth another shot. Otherwise, we're currently standing with Sura(??), Head(soph), and Frahm(?) at guard. Unless McGrady is looking to slim down and slide over. Discuss...
Wesley is like Plan P, last resort. We don't want him back, but he's probably better than others if we don't get Stevenson, Banks, or anyone else.
Followup - I just saw that BimaThug beat me to this idea in the Bogans thread. Oh well. Maybe this idea merits its own discussion. Plus, it's the off season. This is what we do.
You know Wesley is just loving all the Rockets follies this summer. Knock Knock... Who's there... CD... CD Who... C D reason I am here is to beg forgiveness and offer you the Minimum... SLAM!
there are plenty of guys still left on the market that could produce more for us than wesley could next season.
and you try to sign those players, but you will also need a backup that doesn't eat into the MLE. and right now, I'm not thinking VG is looking at Head as that backup
OK, so we didn't sign James, so what? why panic so early? I would sign Novak and Pat rather than Wesley.
Ugghhh. Win-Now has officially evolved into Serenity-Now. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!
I agree. I have been reading quite a few of the post topics since the draft and was astonished at not seeing any referenece at all to Wesley. Sure he's been round the track a few times, but I see that as a positive. I think he may be a viable plan B, lacking other options. As TMACFORVP says he is a real hardnosed player, plays good D, and if we can bring him off the bench he ought to perform much better with fewer minutes.
The fact that fans are considering Wesley now just shows how PATHETIC the offseason is turning out. This keeps up and T-Mac and Yao will be demanding trades in the not so near future.
Our Lineup: Yao Mutombo Howard Battier Hayes Battier McGrady Novak McGrady Head Wesley Alston Wesley Head Jeeeeez. Please get us some talent!!!
This should have went under the topic called "You know when your off-season blows when.... David wesley WT? imma outta here
I think if Wesley is available for the veterans minimum after we sign a 2 guard with some size, it'd almost be foolish not to re-sign him. No, he's not a legit starter anymore, but that doesn't mean he couldn't flourish with a less demanding role. I'd be fine with him as a backup, but I might just cry if he comes back as our starter.
Or like this: CD: Knock, knock. DW: Who's there? CD: CD DW: SEE DEEZ NUTS? CD: What? DW: SEE DEEZ NUTS? (pause) CD: Knock, knock.
