He can use debt to finance real estate far more easily than an NBA roster. You don't have to pay for a new building with direct cash flow. Tilman is a balance sheet billionaire, not a liquid billionaire - those are far more rare but a lot of them are sports owners. If Tilman was liquid rich his risk aversion in basketball wouldn't be so high as it obviously is.

Go to a bank and show them a proforma model to develop a casino.
Then go to a bank and show them that you want to pay [random NBA defensive wing] $30M.
See which one they'll help you with.

Sports ownership is different than any other business. Athletes are not long term investments. This is a cash demanding, lightning quick, liquid industry.

I imagine everyone in here thinks they have a good understanding of money but we always have a lot of people making general statements in here ("he rich, yall idiots") without any nuance - which proves otherwise.

Of course if you want to argue with me we don't have to discuss financial models. Let's discuss on court results since 2018 versus spending/money saving moves. Checkmate.

Edit: Tilman is smart and ambitious. He is, and will be, personally successful. He has, and will build a commercial and real estate empire. In the short term, that is not correlated with basketball success. His ventures and leveraged assets are supporting each other. It's a carefully constructed jenga tower. Basketball success means hiring the smartest people and gving them lots of right-now money to do their job without any external hindrance.

It would be interesting to see the true financial numbers of every team in the league. We know some owners are willing to pay the luxury tax but how many of them actually take a true loss. Mark Cuban is the only owner I can think of in recent memory that has said as much. I'd think if I was rich enough to buy a sports team, I'd treat it like a toy and not expect to make money off of it.

Couldn’t agree more. This is also why his money follows his priorities… the underlying sentiment is the rockets were purchased as a statement piece and “toy” for his son. But, it was really a clever leverage play to gain more exposure for Landry’s to infiltrate the Toyota center and the nba as a whole. Wasn’t it Landry’s that provided food for the bubble?

smart but the rockets are not a priority when it comes to spending, especially because of the liquidity. Examples besides LTS are the facilities and coaching staff etc..

I think Tilman could turn into a good spending owner if his plans continue to come to fruition. I am trying not to hate him for what has happened so far. We are just not there yet.

Yes it turns out investing in real estate makes more money than investing in improving a basketball team

Its still fun to see all the losers caping for tilman. I wonder what team you support more, landrys or the rockets?

There is hope that officiating will allow another "Dream". It looks like the "free to contend act" ran true for this NBA season.

UH downtown is nice and modern.

back in the UH was just where people go to play video games and have high school graduation

Cool. I am a Houston Rockets fan. I only care about Tilman's wealth portfolio to the extent that effects the team. Tilman inherited a great team and burned it to the ground in less than three years. Tilman has not invested in the team enough to be a championship contender. It starts with how he treats people and cuts corners and it is born out in having the worst record in the league two years running. That is unacceptable.

It's a good thing these teams are not publicly-traded corporations. Just imagine the field day the media would have after earnings calls lmao

Why do people act like owners pay for stuff out of their own pocket? The Rockets are a business.

Same with this resort. Tilman is not putting up this money himself. He secures funding for it.

Complete and utter nonsense. This team was going to rebuild even if Les Alexander was still the owner. It’s the natural lifecycle of a professional sports team.
