Three Blasts Rock Egyptian Resort City 39 minutes ago

CAIRO, Egypt - Three explosions Monday night rocked the Egyptian resort city of Dahab and there were at least 100 dead and wounded, according to the doctor who runs Egypt's Sinai Peninsula rescue squad.

Dr. Said Essa said he was headed to the scene of the blasts, one of which hit the el-Mashrabiyah Hotel.

Dahab is located on the Gulf of Aqaba on the eastern side of the Sinai Peninsula.

Police officials said more than 20 ambulances and police cars were rushing to the el-Masbat section of the city.

I wonder what kind of preventitive security they had in place? I would guess they had some basic checkpoints which failed. It doesn't seem like enough as these types of events have become suddenly normal in today's world. I wonder if this is lax security on anyone's part?

gwayneco....for someone who takes terrorism very seriously, why are you taking this attack so lightly, as indicated by the title of this thread?

I don't know. I probably need to be sedated - for several hours (or days).

I'm hearing now that the resort is fairly small so it probably doesn't have as good security as some of the other Red Sea resorts like Sharm El Sheik. Even so as the bombing in Tel Aviv show determined terrorists are hard to deter.

Doesn't matter what kind of security they had (I know for a fact security is anything but 'lax' at those places this time of year). No one can top the Israelis in this aspect, just ask them how effective their 'security' has been against determined Palestinian bombers.

You can stop them some of the time, but nothing is fool-proof...

Maybe it would be best to have a foreign policy that doesn't increase them.

I know it is tough for the Decider and his supporters who are into peace through strength instead of peace through justice, but still.

    I fully agree

The patterns of resistance in many parts of the Middle East and North Africa like Egypt and Saudi Arabia are similar to what went on in Iran during the mid-1960s and 1970s and we all know what happened there in 1979

Seeing this attack makes me so sad! I've been to Dahab a half dozen times. It's a relaxed resort where you used to be able to stay for a couple of bucks a nights while diving and enjoying the beach. It started as a backpacker spot in the '60s and kept that feel through the '90s. I haven't been there since '99.

Security in the Sinai is pretty tight since so many Israelis and other foreigners vacation there. Egypt cannot afford to loose it's Sinai tourist dollars.

I don't understand who the bomb was supposed to target. 20 of the 23 dead are Egyptians, reportedly Christians. After the recent flairups in Alexandria, this is not a good trend.

I know how you feel. I had been to the Sari Club, the nightclub that was bombed in Bali in the mid-90's.

Its possible the bombing was meant to target Egyptians in general to send a message to the Mubarak regime. Until someone comes forward and claims responsibility its too early to say for sure who was behind it.
