I don't know if this has been posted yet but, Tom Thibodeau, Steve Clifford and Andy Greer (all former Knicks assistants) are about to join Rockets and Ewing is close behind...

...The Knicks are expected to fill one more position,
and there is a strong possibility that John Starks will
be hired as a coaching associate. Patrick Ewing,
Starks' former teammate who was not interviewed by
the Knicks, is considering a job on Jeff Van Gundy's staff
in Houston. Former Knick assistants Tom Thibodeau, Steve Clifford
and Andy Greer are close to signing with the Rockets.
    ...

It will be wierd to see Swing sitting on the ROCKETS bench if he signs.

I guess Elie didn't leave that great of an impression on JVG.

I was ok(not excited, but... ok) with Ewing as an assistant with the Rockets. I'm definitely unhappy about Starks as an assistant. I think he needed a firm hand by a coach when he was a player to keep him in check. I don't know why he'd be able to have any control as a coach. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. I'd be happy if I was. I'd be more happy if wasn't a coach on the Rockets staff at all.

starks is close to becoming an assistant for the knicks not the rockets, no need to worry.

hopefully we'll have some good news about elie joining us though.

John Starks is going to the Knicks as an assistant not the Rockets.

There is still the possibility of JVG adding Elie...look at how many assistants the Mavs have. As long as we have some experience (Tom Thibodeau, Steve Clifford and Andy Greer) along with the "interns", I'm down with hiring anybody including Ewing, Elie, or even Calvin Murphy.

Not necessarily. There's not rule that says VG will only have 4 assistants. I think it is possible, maybe even likely, that he retains one assistant with ties to the team like Elie.

What is the limit of assistant coaches a team can have?

There is no limit. Usually the head coach decides. Traditionally it is 3-5 per team. The fear is that if you have too many, that the power structure of the head coach breaks down

Seems like this would be a very good PR/fan move. He doesn't want to look like a carpetbagger or like he's trying to create the Western Knicks

Rocket River: "God I hope we don't become the '94 Knicks [...] thugball?"

That was Riley, not Van Gundy.

I like the idea of Ewing as a personal coach for Yao. I'd love to see the Rockets hire another assistant to be a personal PG coach for Francis and Norris. John Lucas, maybe? Or Derek Harper?
