Based on a recent work story... setup story TL;DR one coworker curses a lot, another coworker doesn't like it and complained to me. My response though was just that I curse a lot. But apparently it's different because I just say "****" a lot and not "g-d". With reference to the commandment.

Now, I wouldn't call myself a practicing christian but I've been to more than one sermon. I read the whole book. It's not my thing but I do live in a way that agrees with some of the values because that's what I believe and choose to do. I don't kill people because I think it's wrong, not because "god said not to" or whatever. Take that however you like, I suppose.

    ANYWAY

I always thought it meant don't use the influence of god for your own gain. Don't misrepresent god. Don't make promises "on god", "I swear to god..." false promises. Basically let god do god's talking, and keep your bullshit your bullshit. Sure, there's some irreverence in cursing but why is that the most called out example when it's also probably the least damaging example?

Using/misusing religion to influence people and politics. Representing/misrepresenting a church while committing to depravities. "if you do this you'll go to hell." Donate to my church and you'll be saved, then the doors are closed when they're needed open.

I gotta say, those are the examples that inflict real pain and suffering in the world and I don't think there's really much of a debate on it. And they're so very prevalent. Me saying "god damn it" when I stub my toe isn't really on the same level - but if I say "god damn it" when I stub my toe it's going to offend more than a megachurch pastor going to jail for sexually abusing a 12 year old? This is right along with the rest of the reasons I grew up in church but think the **** is stupid. Showing up on Sunday doesn't preclude one living like a bozo 6.5 days a week.

Hell if I'm wrong, eh? lol...

I know it's just rambling at this point but it's been on my mind and since I don't go to church idk who else to pose the question to... why is this the "god damn" interpretation?

The question is what is best for office Harmony.
This will probably come down to who is the most squeaky wheel
    and
If you give in to this . .. what will be next?>

Honestly. . . more and more I am becoming a Deist (Not a pure one because I think SOME intervention but not much)

    ChatGPT:
A deist is someone who believes in the existence of a creator or supreme being who designed the universe but does not intervene in its operation.

    Here’s a breakdown:

    Core Beliefs
    • God as Creator: Deists believe the universe was created by a rational, intelligent being.

    • No Ongoing Intervention: After creating the universe, God does not interfere — no miracles, revelations, or divine guidance.

    • Reason over Revelation: Deists rely on human reason, science, and observation of the natural world to understand God’s existence, rather than scripture or organized religion.
    Historical Context
Deism became popular during the Enlightenment (17th–18th centuries), especially among thinkers like:

    • Voltaire

    • Thomas Jefferson

    • Benjamin Franklin

    • Thomas Paine
They admired religion’s moral teachings but rejected supernatural claims and church authority.

    ⚖️ In Contrast To:
    • Theism: Belief in a personal God who interacts with the world and answers prayers.

    • Atheism: Belief that no god exists.

    • Agnosticism: The view that we can’t know whether God exists.
