I don't hoop very much and am not very knowledgable about sports medicine, so what are those thick black bands that players sometimes wear around, near their kneecaps? Do they help from knee from separating or getting injured? what gives?

A brace? They can add support when you're recovering from, and beyond, a knee injury.

I have some bizarre condition from swimming waaaay too much - rubbed a ton of cartilage off from under my kneecap. I had to wear this knee thing that had a hole right over the kneecap to keep it in place. Doubt that's what you're asking about though.

I'm thinking of cartilage off the kneecap - must be lunchtime.

not exactly kneepads... they look like black thick round rubber bands... Kobe had some on recently and I've seen someone from the Rockets with them... I don't have a pic, but they look like black rubber rings or something!?

I think hes talking about the black things they wear UNDERNEATH the knee, right?
Not knee pads, but those things that go underneath...or hell, maybe they are knee pads that work differently?
    Doesn;t Pippen wear one?

    or perhaps Kobe...and its white!

    lol, AntiSonic.

Um... I have no idea what that's for. But I might start wearing one when I mow the yard, just cuz it looks cool.

"Alleviates knee stress and pain through pressurized tubing that provides compression to the knee area. Designed to support the tendons around the knee by lifting the kneecap. Helps prevent cartilage wear and inflammation. Breathable and stretchable for a comfortable fit. (For correct sizing, measure the circumference of the leg just below the knee)."

They worked for me. I had some pretty bad tendonitis pain for my first year in college...but after using those it went away fairly quickly.

Of course I tore my ACL while wearing one...but I doubt that was related in any way.

    Surgery tomorrow...BOOOOOO!

Yeah they reduce knee stress, also young kids in sports with ( i am going to butcher this) Osgensalughters wear them, if anyone knows how to spell that they will have my respect. I have a hard enough time saying it:D

I have "Osgood Schlatter's", also known as tendonitis... I do wear one of those Cho-Pat straps, although it doesn't help too much.... Also, on my other knee i have a dislocated patella, and tore a ligament last year, so i know a lot about knees:(

It's not supposed to be fashion like low cut socks or headbands :p
