Is Brent Barry worth 5 million a season? That's what he wants, for 4 years. That would mean he would command the FULL MLE.

Frank Hughes of the Tacoma News Tribune:
The Seattle SuperSonics want to get guard Brent Barry signed to a contract extension before he becomes a free agent this summer and have contacted his agent, Arn Tellum, in an attempt to do so.

Unfortunately, the sides are far apart.

Tellum and Sonics GM Rick Sund met and according to sources, Sund told him that the Sonics would offer a two-year deal worth $10 million..

However, according to sources wants a four-year deal for $23 million that would expire when he is 35.

Sources also say that several teams have contacted Tellum saying they would offer Barry the 4 year/$23 million contract that he wants this summer.

Several teams have called Sund about Barry but have been rebuffed.

Some possibilities mentioned are Atlanta, Boston, Golden State, New York, Orlando, and Portland.

I saw that article and believe he's asking a fair amount...go Rox, trade for him with this 'agreement' in place.

Yeah 3 years and 5 mill is a fair price. I dunno about 4.

Isn't it tampering to make offers on a player that is still under contract?

A team can 'feel' out his agent about signability before a trade.

    full MLE? Sign me up.

I wouldn't go more than four years. But that's not terrible for a good role player.

He can be a brilliant player when he puts his mind to it, and he's certainly worth more than the MLE ... if he puts his mind to it.

But, even at his 17-6-6 best, he's worth the most to a team as a third guard, off the bench.

4-years at a six million per sounds good for a third guard of his (high) caliber, I'm interested to see where he heads this summer. I hope he bolts Seattle, mainly because Sund follows every great move with a boneheaded move or two.

You can cross ATL off of Barry's list. They won't be a playoff team during the length of his 4 year contract. Barry started his NBA career with the Clippers, I highly doubt he wants to end it with a worse franchise. IMO, solid veterans will make the Hawks pay a surcharge for their services.

Ainge's vision of the Celtics is uptempo. Probably not a good fit especially since they now have Atkins and Banks at PG. There's a possibility GS will be several million under the cap and not have an MLE. I could see Isiah trying a SnT for Barry and one of Seattle's excess bigs...James, Booth or Potapenko. ORL would be my sleeper destination.

If we get him in the offseason (which would be nice), I hope we don't go for more than a 3 year contract. I'm getting pretty adverse to anything longer, unless it's for a young "star" or someone who relatively young and a starter in a position of need. I'm not sure Barry fits that description.

I hope the Rockets get him.

Of course...I would really love to have Carlos Boozer or maybe Troy Murphy or Mehmet Okur or Jamaal Magloire over him.

But Brent Barry would be nice. Desmond Mason would be even better.

How would Barry not be good on a fast break team. He's athletic, can finish, and can shoot on the kick-out.

Righto. In half-court slugfests, BB tends to lose interest and play the invisible man.

It would only make sense if Franics (more likely) or Mobley were traded for a starting forward, otherwise we need our MLE for a forward, likely one who can play the 4 primarily.

i'd say the same thing, but a player is only good as the system that he's in (unless you're playing pg or the player is a franchise player). regarding brent barry, i don't see him being as successful with the rox unless other changes were made to the team. see him being more of a posey player.

It's exciting to me that this team is probably guarenteed to get someone who will be a significant contributor to a championship team. Whether that's Barry or Boozer or whoever....I'm excited.

When you consider that's about what we gave Moochie, that's a hell of a bargain. :D

I have to say Barry is worth the MLE. The prolem is that we are so close to the cap and his 4.5M salary might cost Les 8M a year. We know there is no way Les is going to pay for luxury tax. Unless we trade way SF, MoT, or Cato, CD's hands are tied.

Most likely, MoT and Cato will be gone during the off season. Cato can't defend the perimeter, can't shoot, costs too much; MoT is not JVG-type guy, also costs too much. If Isiah can trade all these guys in New York, I don't see why Rox can't trade away MoT and Cato.

I do not know about Steve though.

It would be smart to trade Mo T to Seattle for Brent Barry and Vlad Rad. Sund has said he'd facilitate a sign and trade for Barry, so we can make the salaries work. Barry would be an excellent addition to our backcourt; Vlad Rad can play well with Ming.

We can use the TE to get the forward. I'd try to make a package for Kurt Thomas. Thomas and Radmonovic would make a decent pair, inside-out, at the 4.

We can trade Cato to Toronto for Donyell Marshall.

We can trade SF3 to Portland for Ray Allen, with Seattle getting SAR or Randolph.

We'd still have Cat, Pike and Boki to trade for other pieces.

Perhaps Lopez for Boki or Pike.

    Yao /Kurt Thomas
    Kurt Thomas / Vlad Rad
    D. Marshall / JJ
    R. Allen / Cat
    B. Barry/R. Lopez

8 man rotation. Then we'd also have AG, and the Bokinator; could bring back Tmo and Braggs and a pg.

Anyhoo, I think Taylor for Barry and V.Rad is a good deal. Alternatively, We could trade Cato for J.James and Barry.

I like the looks of that lineup! I doubt we could make all of those moves but that final lineup looks damn tight to me! :)
