Found this quote but haven't vetted it yet. Saw it in a signature on another forum.... "Sunshine is a form of energy, and the winds and the tides are manifestations of energy. Do we use them? Oh, no! We burn up wood and coal, as renters burn up the front fence for fuel. We live like squatters, not as if we owned the property." -- Thomas Alva Edison, 1910 I now refer to myself as a Green Republican-- still not convinced about the human responsibility for global warming or even the tizzy about global warming but just want to be a better steward of our beautiful planet.
giddy, thanks for the good thought. Definitely seems we could all get behind that simple statement, give or take what we think we're already affecting or not. Great potential in the winds and tides.
I'm definitely for taking care of our planet. However, last night, as I watched a Nova episode with a segment detailing a scientists assertion that global warming was behind all the mass extinctions of the planet, I found myself wondering how little control we have over our planets environment.
Unfortunately, it appears we do exert a great amount of influence on the Earth's climate and biodiversity. Not to make this into yet another global warming thread, of course. But seriously, it's real and it's our fault.
Humans are the only living creature on this planet who does not live in harmony with nature. Really, it's just a matter of time before things get out of control. But I'm a selfish b*stard. As long as it doesn't happen in my lifetime... well, screw my great-grandchildren.
