....and the only Aggies I'm friends with were two-percenters while they were there. Hazing, again, by the Corps This looks like fun! I'd sure want to be friends with guys who thought a good time including stripping me, blindfolding me, and duct-taping my arms and legs. Oh, wait-- no I wouldn't, because I'm heterosexual and so far in my life, I've been able to make friends without sycophantically allowing them to abuse and humiliate me. What the hell is wrong with these people?
If you're not an Aggie, you'll never understand it. If you're an Aggie, you'll never be able to explain it. I thank God everyday my Dad raised me to not be an Aggie.
I never gave Texas A&M one thought as a senior in high school. As soon as I knew my SAT would get me into Texas, I was there. It's funny, because I didn't do any research into the two schools. I didn't really know anything about A&M. I just instinctively knew that I wanted nothing to do with it, and that instinct was one of the greatest gifts God ever gave me. The thing is, some of my best friends are 2-percenters. There's nothing wrong with Texas A&M if you treat it like it's a university and not as an excuse to play Johnny the Homo-Erotic Soldier Boy for four years.
Photos Discovered Of A&M Students Bound, Gagged University Officials Say Hazing Will Not Be Tolerated Posted: 10:18 a.m. CDT June 19, 2002 Updated: 10:36 a.m. CDT June 19, 2002 COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M University police are investigating about a dozen photos found at the yearbook office that show students, believed to be members of the Aggie Band, naked, gagged and bound with duct tape. The director of the University Police Department, Bob Wiatt, said his office opened an investigation Monday after the pictures were discovered on a computer at the yearbook's campus office last week. "There are about a dozen pictures and it would certainly appear to be hazing," Wiatt told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Wiatt said it is believed the pictures were taken in April, but the police department hasn't received any complaints from students believed to be involved. He said the pictures are of a number of different individuals the department is trying to identify and contact. Many students have left campus for the summer, he said. The police department will turn its findings over to the Brazos County Attorney's Office, which will determine if charges should be filed, Wiatt said. The Bryan-College Station Eagle reported Tuesday that Tamara Adams, the yearbook's editor, found the photos, which had been scanned electronically and saved onto a computer in the office. She notified the head of the university's journalism department who turned the photos over to a university administrator, according to the university's student run newspaper, The Battalion. The university will await the findings of the police investigation before proceeding with its own inquiry and considering any disciplinary action. "It's disappointing," J. Malon Southerland, vice president for student affairs, told the newspaper. "The photos were relatively explicit, so it was clear it should involve a University Police investigation." University rules and state law prohibit hazing. Southerland said hazing will not be tolerated at the university, which had 44,618 students last year.
HA! Dad to his aggie sons: " Ozarka , Feral why you boys flunking your night class about dirt?" Sons: Dad we're going to Texas A&M we don't take P&M classes...
Out of curiousity, is there is any reason there aren't a lot of Aggies (or at least, vocal ones) on this board? I mean, we have a ridiculous number of Longhorns and A&M is about the same size and actually closer to Houston. We have scattered Rice, UH, Baylor, Tech, etc people ... even a few OU guys, but very few Aggies. I just find that kind of odd.
Good grief, these guys need to just have sex and get it over with! I've seen less gay-looking men on the street corner of Montrose and Westheimer during the Gay Pride Parade!
"The funny thing about this incident is that the Battalion has once again sensationalized a story that they really knew relatively little about. Who are they racing against for the scoop anyway? There was only one cadet involved in this incident and he was a senior. It was his birthday so some fish nabbed him, stripped him down, taped him up, drove him down the highway a few miles, and dropped him off with a backpack containing some shorts and a cell phone. He was later picked up by a group of fellow seniors. Since this was not part of any initiation or any requirement for membership or promotion in a student organization and it was consensual, it can not be defined under state or university law as hazing. It was a simple prank pulled on a person by his friends on his birthday. (Spare me the "What kind of friends would...argument.) I understand that seeing the pictures with no explanation is certainly alarming, but when the investigation is complete and the concerned parties are exonerated from any guilt or suspicion, I hope the Battalion will report the result with as much fervor. I agree that hazing is stupid and ruins the fun (as in this case) for everyone else, but the day that fish walk around "bullying" or "hazing" seniors on this campus is the day they should just go ahead and shut everything down." hmmm... i really would love to know the thought process of people to do such extreme hazing... and to take pictures on top of that? WOW!
I am not an Aggie or Longhorn. I am neutral when it comes down to the rivalry. However one question, Isn't Austin a bit more liberal and open then Aggie Land???? Waco is getting the same way too. I am glad I am going out of state this fall.
I'm an Aggie and proud to be one. It has gotten me many advantages in life and created a ready made network for job searches and internships. As and Aggie, I go to football and baseball games, participate in Aggies for Christ, and enjoy many of the other traditions at A&M. However, I am not in the Corps of Cadets, nor do I participate in anything that they do. Only about 4 or 5% of the student population has anything to do with the Corps. I have many friends that went to UT as well as many friends that go to A&M from high school and from what I can tell a degree from either will get you a good job. The only reason I went to A&M was it was a closer drive to home when I was a freshman and I'm glad to have made that decision because I'm very happy with my school. The hazing issue is overblown. Any frat or other organization is going to have hazing. Any other College with an ROTC or military program is going to have hazing. I just think that you hear about from A&M because they have a normal student population mixing with a military program. Places like the Citadel or other military instutions have closed doors, so non-military people do not get exposed to the hazing or pranks like they do at A&M. The Cadets: The Corps is not for me, and I am very glad that I did not go into the Corps, however it is for some people. As a military ROTC program it is very respected around the country. Per capita there have been more Medal of Honor winners from the Corps than from West Point. Just walking through the memorial student center, seeing the walls lined with the medals of Aggies honored by their counrty sends chills down your back. There is a famous quote where General Patton states: "Give me an army of West Point graduates and I'll win you the battle, give me a handful of Texas Aggies and I'll win you the war" Corps members love to point to that quote as inspiration. Many, many Aggies have died fighting on foreign soil for your freedom as the many memorials to their bravery around campus remind you while your walking to class. It gives you a certain pride in your school to know that. BUT: Hazing is stupid, whether in the Corps, a frat, or in any other institution. They like to say it toughens you up and makes you a part of the whole, but I think its just a way for the older classmen to take out their angst and frustrations on freshmen. In sum: Are there stupid practices at A&M that cast a shadow on the school even though they are done by a small majority of the student population....yes. Are the vast majority of students just like any other students from any other school....yes. Am I proud of everything that Aggies do...no. Am I proud to be an Aggie...yes. There are many good things that people don't know about at A&M and if they took the time to look into things like Silver Taps, Muster, Yell Practice, and things like that...they would see that A&M is actually a pretty darn good school and a lot of fun to be a part of...despite the few problems that it has.
The kind of groupies that band would attract would be the male kind that like to wear white garbage suits and squeeze themselves until they yell at football games. Definitely not the kind you, or I, would want to attract. By the way, have a Happy Birthday!!
