Why is this? What is it about Golden State? This man can have back to back 30 bombs against the thunder but he gets locked up by curry? Why? Is there something about GPII that we aren’t seeing? He’s averaging 13 ppg vs golden state whereas he averages 20 against most teams.

Good stuff...I love looking at numbers like these...

Seems like GS is maybe the worst possible matchup we could have gotten for Jalen.
Offensively he shoots worst against them than any other team and his defensive rating against them is one of his worst also.

Just from this regular season here are the players who played more than 15 mpg against GS sorted by net rating:

And here are the same results for the playoffs:

Jalen has been bad against them in the regular season and in the playoffs. Amen was good in the regular season against them, but fell off a cliff in the playoffs. Some of the other guys, mainly Alpi have stepped their game up when the games mattered most.

I wonder if it's that he struggles with physicality and GSW is one of the most physical teams on defense (i.e. they get away with a ton of fouls)

Eye test tells me Jalen Green scores significantly lower against good teams.

As long as he plays aggressive without turning it over a million times like Game 4, he will create opportunities just by virtue of how they're playing him. But there has to be the threat of him scoring, otherwise he doesn't provide nearly as much as we would all like--especially against Golden State.

I like how he played in Game 5...time will tell if we come back to this thread happy after Game 6. I'm hoping for a big game!

Jalen played three or four good mins to start the game. And then disappeared again

Yep, that's all we need out of him. If they show a double and he just passes without attacking and not making them commit it pretty much locks up our offense since he's the only one they are scared of on the perimeter.

They really only seem to be worried about Sengun and Green so both guys have to at the least draw them in.

Jalen did fine tonight. Not many points, but that didn't matter.

Now its obvious Jalen was the problem in the losses. They just had to figure out a way around it. Jalen has been completely exposed.
But on the other hand, now that GS knows that they have figured it out, maybe that softens up the lockdown on Jalen a bit.

Radio folks said he was favoring his knee a lot and had it wrapped on the bench whenever possible. Post-game show was saying he has been banged up and implied he sacrificed too much for the consecutive starts streak

That’s on him, then! The consecutive streak literally means nothing—and if it causes him to play worse in the playoffs, especially against a team he’s historically struggled against, even as a fan of his I can’t make excuses for it

That's how Kerr dares Udoka to change his plan. Very simple trade off: I'm going to give your role players open 3's and only when they make those 3's at a high enough rate and frequency, it can unlock our defense on your stars. Udoka should be putting as much shooting around Sengun/Green as possible, but instead he brings in people who can't shoot and begs them to make jumpers far more often/distant than they've made in their life. Kerr is making a psychological bet here: Udoka just won't go with skill over toughness.

It's why Jayson Tatum only averaged 21.5 ppg in the NBA Finals against the Warriors. They trap and harass a scorer and force everyone else to beat them with fast 3's. If you don't take a fast 3, they will progressively expand from the paint to closing out the shooters, giving the two people who trapped your scorer enough time to recover. When Jaylen Brown was turned into a jump shooter, he only shot 34% from 3.

In the case of the Celtics, Udoka actually had the shooting advantage over the Warriors and did not take advantage. He wanted his team to take the shots the Warriors were giving up, which was of course the midrange and the floater area - where he got killed (39.9% on short midrange/floaters and 32% on midrange). His team was tougher in the Finals and the better team but went home with the L. The only other shot Kerr will give you is your role players taking 3's. If you keep putting more bigs and non-shooters on the floor, you will not take enough of those to punish what Kerr is doing. Udoka just doesn't feel secure if he doesn't have multiple tough guys on the court pushing people around. Unfortunately you don't get points for pushing people around. Those tough guys end up having to make jumpers anyway and that's a dumb plan.

Green has majorly underwhelmed in all but one game this series, but a successful series wouldn't have looked like 25+ ppg. It would have looked like 22 points and 7 assists with low FG% and higher than usual 3PT% within an overall low scoring series.

They’re one of the smarter defensive teams, and Jalen doesn’t do well when he’s frustrated. Nothing more than that.

Concerning? Weak word for him....he is a devastating force ...just not against opponents merely devastating his own team.
