    Legally Blind Golfer Gets Hole-In-One

Wed Mar 30, 7:45 AM ET

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A man who is legally blind has heard it before, so he was naturally skeptical when he was told he scored a hole-in-one while golfing at a local golf course. "They've said it before," said Joel Ludvicek, 78.

Only this time it was true.

Ludvicek aced the 168-yard No. 11 hole at Twin Pines golf course with a driver.

He had to rely on his three golfing partners to confirm the feat, because Ludvicek is legally blind.

"A big fluke, it's just one of those things," Ludvicek said.

He has been an avid golfer for years and this is his second hole-in-one. It's his first since he lost most of his vision because of macular degeneration.

He said his vision is hazy and he can't see things he's directly looking at.

Ludvicek, who tees up his own ball, said although the ace was special, it's no different from other golfers.

"It's funny how golf goes," he said. "Most of the time I have a heck of a time getting on the green. It's a fun game."

That's awesome. How does that work, does someone have to point him in the right direction?

If i am not mistaken Legally Blind doesn't mean you see only black and can't see a thing. Basically everything is beyond blurry and you can't technically make out anything but still have a bit of vision. Either way to just make a hole in one is crazy...

Right, but at that blurry he still has NO idea where the pin is when's he standing on the green. And as you probably know, if you're even turned just slightly the wrong way you're screwed.

Legally blind isn't too bad. I played baseball legally blind and batted about .254 and never made an error at 2b. You basically see every object, you just don't see it with clarity. For example, he could still play outfield and be legally blind. You can pick up the baseball pretty fast. Depending on how blind he is he would be able to see the trees and general layout of the hole. He'd probably have a hard time finding the flag at that range but he would be able to see the green.

It was a question on You Don't Know Jack, actually...

Now, let's see this guy hit the 17th green at Sawgrass...THEN I'll be impressed...

I was legally blind at 3 years old.

I think my eye sight was like 20/400. Yup - The coke bottle model.

    Thank goodness for contact lenses.

I am not 100% sure on this but legally blind means that you can't be corrected to 20/80 with corrective lenses.

As someone with horrible vision without glasses, I don't see how this is possible. Were you playing t-ball? I don't know the definition of legally blind, but if it is anything like my uncorrected vision (don't know what it is, but I could just barely get Lasik done), there's no way I could play 2B, or basketball, or football.
