    Rockets Re-Sign Mobley

HOUSTON, Aug. 2 – The Houston Rockets have re-signed free-agent guard Cuttino Mobley to a multi-year contract, Executive Vice President of Basketball Carroll Dawson announced today.

    Mobley

This past season Mobley averaged career highs of 15.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 81 games (eight starts) with the Rockets. The 6-4, 190-pound shooting guard led all NBA reserves with fewer than 10 starts in scoring, finishing second in voting to Phoenix's Rodney Rogers for the 2000 NBA Sixth Man Award. Mobley recorded a league-high 23 20-point efforts off the bench and stood with Dallas' Cedric Ceballos as the only NBA players to post multiple 30-point games as a reserve.

During the 1999-2000 season, Mobley became just the second Rockets reserve to ever average 15 points in a season, joining Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy (who, as a reserve, accomplished this during the 1971-72 and 1980-81 seasons). Mobley also held the distinction of being the only NBA reserve to rank second on his team in scoring. In addition, he ranked second on the team in field goals made and attempted, 3-pointers made and attempted, and free throws attempted. His free throw percentage of .847 placed him 17th overall in the NBA.

Mobley led or tied for the Rockets lead in scoring 18 times this past year, reaching double figures 65 times and 20 points 25 times. The University of Rhode Island product increased his shooting percentage every month of the season and finished the season by averaging 20.3 points on .490 shooting in April. He scored a career-high and Rockets individual season-high-tying 35 points vs. Seattle on April 16, one of three 30-point performances this past season. He scored 10 points with three assists as a starter for the Sophomore Team in the Schick Rookie Challenge during the NBA All-Star Weekend.

Overall, Mobley has averaged 13.6 points and 3.1 rebounds in 130 games with Houston. He earned 1998-99 Schick All-Rookie Second Team recognition after averaging 9.9 points and 2.5 assists in his first year. Selected by Houston with the 41st overall pick of the 1998 NBA Draft, Mobley made 37 starts at point guard as a rookie.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Almost every stat in that article talks about Mobley being a reserve...What exactly defines the term "reserve" or "sixth man"??

Is there a certain number of games in which somebody has to come off the bench in order to count as a "reserve"?

    anybody?

Not sure what the "official" definition of reserve is, but the article states, "The 6-4, 190-pound shooting guard led all NBA reserves with fewer than 10 starts in scoring..."

So, fewer than 10 starts = reserve?

    Anybody? Bueller?

A reserve is anybody who doesn't start.

Look at it this way. If everyone is healthy, would Cuttino start? No, he would come off the bench, as sixth man. That's what counts most.

What I like best about the article is the fact that Cuttino also improved his performance over the last part of the season.

In April, incidentally, Walt Williams shot 57% and averaged 16.3 points. If you abandon the game immediately after the suspension (an 0-8 outing by the Waltster) he shot 63% and averaged 18.5 points.

Hopefully this was a sign of chemistry, and not everyone running to class after the bell had already rang (a ripoff of an nbatalk joke about a GSW player last year).
