Where's Bonzi? Out for 'family reasons' (Update)
When the Rockets returned to the Toyota Center practice court on Wednesday, but Bonzi Wells was not there.

Wells, who had not been traveling with the team while working on his conditioning, did not go through the Rockets' shootaround or an individual workout for what Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy termed "personal reasons."

"It's a personal, family issue," Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said. Dawson would not elaborate.

Wells also missed nearly a week of training camp for personal reasons and has played in only two games this season before Van Gundy said that Wells needed to get in better condition in order to play.

"Today, he wasn't here for personal reasons," Van Gundy said. "That's the only thing I'm prepared to say."

Asked if Wells would be available for the Rockets' next practice, Van Gundy said, "I don't know. I really don't want to get into hypotheticals because I really don't know. I don't want to take a stab at it.

"I understand the fascination, I really do, but I'm not prepared to go beyond what I just said."

Wells had said last week in an interview with TNT that he did not come to Houston "to run marathons."

"I said really basically what I want to say, but I understand everybody's fascination and speculation, certainly," Van Gundy said. "I think evasive is in everybody's best interest.

"When a guy has personal problems, you want me to tell you what the personal problems are. I'm not going to do it. I'm not going to get into his personal issues. The more I expand my answer on the whys I think would be hurting the trust that you have to have in a relationship. I'm not going to discuss all this through the media.

"I owe it to the fans, speaking through (the media), a certain amount, but I'm not prepared to go past that even though it might satisfy the growing appetite for knowledge about Bonzi's situation."

Van Gundy would not say if Wells was physically ready to play.

"He wasn't here today for personal reasons," Van Gundy said. "There have been a lot of things that have gotten in the way of him being on the court. To go in depth on each and every one to me is not right.

"Right now, the only thing I'm prepared to talk about is tonight. I'm not really in the mindset of talking and speculating. Everybody's heard about his comments on TNT. To say everything has gone real smooth here would probably be a little bit of an overstatement, but I also don't want anyone to read into it that it has taken away from our team. In the last eight games, we're 6-2. That's where I want the focus on, the guys who are playing."

One of those players will be Chuck Hayes, who will come back from a hyperextended left knee to return to the starting lineup tonight.

When Wells will be new of the "guys who are playing," however, remained as uncertain as ever.

Why is he getting on your nerves? Because he's stating the facts?

i guess a 'family issue" could be anything. divorce, sickness, nephew or brother in trouble with the law?

I am glad they arent telling us whats wrong.

Wow, not only is Hayes coming back tonight..but right back into the starting lineup? Must be feeling ok.

As for Bonzi, I have to say that this last bit of news from Feigen just doesn't sound good to me. Not for the long haul.

Sounds like Bonzi is just getting deeper and deeper in JVG's doghouse.

I dont like where this is headed.

Bonzi had to get home to make sure Mrs. Wells is making enough Thanksgiving food for his ******.

There are strict rules around the Wells household about missing Thanksgiving dinner.

Normally I'm inclined to not question these personal leaves too much, but with the report from David Aldridge (I thinki) about his previous personal leave, I'm getting suspicious.

Anyhow, JVG and the team is basically treating Wells like an adault and letting make his own decisions-- whether he wants in or out is up to him. If he wants on the team, there are fitness standards he must meet.

These are not just JVG standards either, Pat Riley is famous for being serious about player fitness, even threatening to shut Shaq down if he didn't get in shape last season).

If he wants off the team, then I figure Rockets can accomodate with a trade, and hopefully getting someone useful in return.

He can't be getting on our nerves since he hasn't done a God d**n thing for us. As far as I'm concern, Bonzi is not really here until he shows up and actually plays in a real game.

Bonzi has really dissapointed me. If he doesnt change his attitude reall quick, we should trade his fat a** to the worst team possible. Being on a terrible team will make him realize how big of an idiot he is. But knowing him....it wouldnt affect him at all.

i said i was willing to believe that he just needs to get healthy, then in shape before playing.

however, after about a month of "training" he should be ready to go.

this is starting to reak of cover up. a cover up which is being handled as professionaly as possible, but still a cover up.

yup. he will be hindered by a HUGE knee brace, so he might not be his usual self. still, a hindered chuck is better than juwon and padgett at 100%.
