Just got home from the game and playing Rock Band. Sadly, singing Maps at the top of my lungs was the height of my day.
It seems that there's at least one thread each season on the anemic crowds at TC. And, yes, I understand that it's REALLY difficult to get excited about such a lousy team (especially in the 2nd half), but there's no excuse for tonight.
I sit in section 402. For those who don't know where that is, I'm in the upper level across the arena from the Rowdies. There were a good handful of Mavericks fans up there, but that's not what I'm upset about.

I'm upset that they were louder than we were.
I'm upset that I couldn't hear the Rockets fans in the second half.
I'm upset that I heard their cries of DE-FENSE over ours.
I'm upset that we, the fans, got outdone in our own arena by invaders from Oklahoma (I don't recognize dallas as part of Texas. I lived in the metroplex for 4 years, and I'd rather move to Baghdad than back to d/FW. Nowhere that crappy and lame could be part of this great state).

I don't expect fans from Houston to be into sports. I don't expect them to be good fans or even watch the game. Crowds for Houston teams have sucked as long as I can remember, and they're never going to be any good (Oilers, 94-95 Rockets, and Series run Astros being the exceptions). But there's a nice scoreboard that tells you when to cheer. It even gives you the words!
I'm not going to change anyone's opinion. I suppose I'm largely just venting my frustration. But I was embarrassed to be at the game tonight. I was embarrassed that, no matter how hard I screamed, I still heard Mavs fans screaming louder. And after 3 quarters, I just felt hopeless. After 4, I was just mad.

This wasn't written very well, but I don't care. I'm posting it anyway. I just had to stay it.

Yeah, you can hear the Mavs fans loud and clear on TV. Then again, the Houston crowd did not have much to cheer for. But then again, our home crowd has always been lame.

    blather,

Toyota Center is corporate just like the rest of Houston.
Passionate fans, do live in Houston and all over the state (I have to say that for Meogwi, he lives far from Houston). But the corporations own lots of tickets, they are there for just entertainment.

When I went to watch a Nuggets game in Denver, I noticed lots of families and kids there. A completely different crowd. Reminds me of back in the day at the Summit when I was a kid. That's where the hardcore fans start from, taking kids to games. Dream and Calvin signed autographs for me. I will always be true to them for that.

If you are a corporate person and can't make it, please give your tickets to real fans.

Oh yeah, I know that one. All of Houston is corporate. And the Summit did have amazing crowds.
I don't expect Houston crowds to pay any attention, but I DO expect them to be louder than dallas crowds. That's pretty much it, really.

Pretty tired of hearing that "Corporate crowd" excuse.

Many cities sell their luxury box suites and courtside seats to companies and the really rich, and they still manage to bring awesome crowds. It's the overall CULTURE and TRADITION of Toyota Center. It's always been lame and always will be lame. Take a psych course and read the Bystander Effect. Nobody does anything because nobody else is doing anything. Everybody conforms to the lameness.. Blah, whatever.

Really not much to be passionate about. TMac isolating and pulling up for jumpers has gotten old. If this team ever learns how to play cohesively or make some smart decisions on the court, I can guarantee even a corporate crowd can make a good amount of noise.

It's like someone come in your house and flirts with your wife. You can't let that happen. You think Philly or Detroit fans would let that happen?? You can't get disrespected in your OWN HOUSE come on now!

    this is pretty sad,
the Knicks crowd has lots of energy they even boo their own team. Plus their team really really suck and the tickets are really high, yet they show up all the time.

Empty seats everywhere tonite. If season ticket holders don't want to go, please give em away to friends, family, the guy standing at the corner with "will work for food" sign, etc. Please there is no reason why the arena shouldnt be packed for a Mavericks game. Besides that, the Rockets stunk it up in second half.

    What are you talking about?
We are all Fans of the Rockets because they provide us with entertainment!
So being at the game for entertainment sounds like a natural thing to me. :p

i am a courtside season ticket holder, have been for 7 years and this whole crowd not contributing is a bunch of crap, and its probably one of the most annoying myths propogated on this bbs. Frankly, when one of your alleged superstars blatantly and obviously quits on the game midway thru the first quarter its kind of hard to get psyched. I have been to arenas all over the country, typically travel to 10 or so of our road games per season and our crowd is for the most part no better or worse than your typical nba arena crowd, with the notable exceptionof arco and gs. Every team's crowd gets loud including ours when the team is playing exciting ball in a passionate manner, something which our team has not done in about 8 games. When they put forth any kind of respectable effort, the crowd will be fine.

Thank you. Pretty much what I suspected. I've had NBALP for 7 years and there always seems to be a direct co-relationship to the lower bowl seat fullness and fan participation that reflects the product on the court at every venue I observe.

I could not agree more. It's such a freaking red herring.

There are very few exceptions to the rule that, in pro sports, if you don't put a good product on the field/court, no one will show up and when they do, they won't be rowdy. It does not matter where you are in this country.

These same Mavs fans had to give away tickets before the Cuban era to fill up half of Reunion Arena. We all marveled at how exciting the atmosphere was in Golden State vs. the Mavs last season....think it's like that in Golden State very often??

Today, it's worse, because the game is so over the top corporate. They've provided a haven for people to come to these games and never sit in the arena with the club level bars and lounges.

Not to mention, this Rockets team is the exact opposite of inspiring. This team wouldn't draw rowdy crowd support in any city in America.

The crowd seems to be fine when Yao is blocking shots like a mad man or when Scola is diving on the floor for loose balls...

So two out of fifteen guys play with heart and passion, the crowd if anything should act as a gage to how hard we are playing.

Did anybody see Yao sitting on the bench when he got sub'd in the 4th once the game was out of reach? He didn't look so happy go lucky. I think he is starting to be a bit more vocal in his role, and thats a good thing.

I thought this was gonna be about U of H crowds.

The don't blame the toybox crowd for not being loud. It fits our team well right now. They show no heart, then we show no heart. I love Tmac as much as everyone here, but I'm starting to get realllllyyyy frustrated with this place as of late.. actually as of last season. Do we have to start booing him before the guy actually starts to play??

Tmac is really showing a bad example. It's reflected by his teammates and the crowd.

Mmm... Not so. The Rockets crowds are only good during the Playoffs.
Yes, T-Mac just quit in the middle of the game. And, yes, I took his jersey off during the 4th quarter. But when your crowd makes up 90% of those in attendance, you should NOT be outdone by INVADERS FROM THE NORTH. Period. I don't care how bad the team is, NO HOUSTON TEAM SHOULD BE OUTCHEERED BY dallas FANS IN HOUSTON. PUNCTUATION MARK THAT COMES AT THE END OF MOST SENTENCES.
I'll compare this crowd to the crowd Wednesday and give my reaction, but it's not going to be much better. Sure, Orlando doesn't have as many fans here, but our crowd will still be pretty anemic.
And poor basketball? People used that same excuse with JVG during the threads about it last season. It's slow and boring. People don't like it. They're not going to cheer for a slow and boring team. Blah blah blah.

And the home crowd DID do some booing. Steve Francis got booed. T-Mac... not so much.
