I just bought a bad @ss Drexler autograph on a Rockets media pass, it's like a "backstage" pass, laminated and on a string. 12 bucks! I thought that was pretty cool...

What kind of stuff have you bought on ebay?

I bought my acoustic bass guitar and a crap load of VHS movies. Now that everyone is switching to DVDs, they are selling their VHS tapes pretty cheap on Ebay, and since I don't have a DVD player, nor do I intend to get one anytime soon, I am bolstering my movie collection through this means.

I've bought more than I can remember on eBay. Everything for a MiniDV camcorder to a several computers and computer equipment to DVDs to out-of-print books to several guitars (I love my mid-80s Charvel that I bought from a guy in Canada for cheap through eBay) and just about anything else. I've managed to get some really good deals, though they seem to be fewer and further between these days.

I've bought probably about 150 different items on eBay, and I've yet to be ripped off.

Hey, I got a question. Exactly how does ebay work? I've obviously never bought anything there, but I want to bid on one particular item.

My question is more of whether the shipping is included in the price, or not. And, exactly how the "contract" to buy works.

I've yet to buy anything off eBay. I don't trust the person-to-person stuff yet. I usually stick to pricematching and coupons via shopping sites for great deals. I'm debating getting a new Kodak DC4800 digicam right now for about $250-$270. The cam sells for about $470-$600 usually. I'm looking at people bidding $500 for these things on eBay right now. Damn. They could get it for cheaper from online stores.

Maybe I'll buy a couple and sell them to eBay people that think they're getting a great deal. [IMG]

Actually, it works great. You and DOD shouldn't be worried.

There are no contracts. It is all person to person buying. Shipping may or may not be included. It all depends on the seller.

Good sellers will explain everything in the description of their item and they will maintain high feedback ratings which are a very good guage of their credibility.

My wife and I have bought and sold literally hundreds of things on Ebay. We just bought probably 4 or 5 things on there this week.

I've bought music equipment, books, videos, CD's, electronics, computer stuff. My wife has bought dishes, electronics, videos and exercise equipment.

We've sold everything from jewelry to furniture to computers to electronics to books to music equipment. Just about everything you could imagine.

The best sale for us ever was one of our first. We picked up a couple of old paperback books at a garage sale for a quarter. They were pulp fiction novels from the 50's.

We sold them on Ebay for $37!!! That got us hooked.

I've helped lots of people buy and sell stuff on Ebay. Like anything, it is buyer beware, but we have NEVER lost money. We've returned things to sellers and even had things returned to us. We've had bidders not pay, but we've never been stiffed on anything.

I love the place! Our watch list is always full!

I haven't ever purchased anything on ebay, but I sell stuff all the time.

The dumbest thing I ever sold was a poster of "Seven of Nine" from PC Gamer. It went for $1.50. I just put it up to see if I could sell anything. Apparently, I can [IMG]

The coolest thing I sell is the Promised Land Milk Bottle. There is a collectable bottle from 1999 which features a Dallas Cowboys logo on it, and I sold one for $20. When I did that, I went to Albertson's and bought EVERY ONE of them. I still have about 9 and now they only go for 3 bucks a pop [IMG]

a Drexler road jersey, a Barkley home and a Barkley road jersey, a couple of Rockets polos and jackets

a pair of "Odorama" scratch-n-sniff cards from _Polyester_

a copy of "The Beatles Recording Sessions", and a mono Sgt. Pepper LP

All my items arrived promptly as as-described except for the mono Pepper LP, which was broken on arrival. I paid less than than going rate ($50 vs ~$100+), and there wasn't a great picture of the actual record, so I was supicious, but ,,, The record was insured for $50, but I never bothered with jumping thru the USPS hoops to claim it.

I'm thinking about buying a VHS movie for my Dad. What happens if when it gets to me, it is broke? Here's the link:

'The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know it' - Starring: John Cleese as S. Holmes

    Jeff,

"We've had bidders not pay, but we've never been stiffed on anything."

How exactly can both those not happen if the first did. Maybe I just don't understand what you're saying.

It's great for finding old, hard to find LP's too. Just bought a Bobby Darin record my dad has been looking for for a long time. Gonna surprise him on Father's Day. [IMG]

Sadly one of the problems with eBay these days is too many ill-informed bidders driving the prices up beyond even the retail prices. One often has to be more patient to find good deals than in the past.

He means the bidder never paid after winning the auction, but because sellers don't send the items until they've received payment, Jeff wasn't out anything (he still had the merchandise to try to auction again or otherwise sell).

Non-paying bidders are a pain, but there's no real loss if a bidder doesn't pay.

As for the VHS tape you were asking about, it all depends on the seller as to what happens if the tape arrives broken. Some sellers would give you a refund, some won't. Most sellers pack their items well, though (I've never had anything arrive broken that I bought through eBay), and sellers with high feedback (that little number next to their name) are usually better to buy from as they have a track record (though be sure and click on the number to see how many positives and negatives they have, etc.)

Well, I've bid on three items. Two I hold the high bid, and one I didn't go high enough, oh well.

It's not that I was leery of using eBay, it's just that I never tried it, until now.

I think that's what's ruined most auction sites. I used to go to ubid.com (not P2P) and get great deals on electronics and other stuff. Now I go there and people are bidding prices that are well over what you can get items for online. I think people compare the prices to what they see at places like "Best Buy" or "Circuit City", and find they're lower, so it must be a great deal.

I don't mind selling stuff on eBay, but I'm not sure I'll ever be able to buy bigger ticket items on it (over $100).

Deals are still out there. You just have to look for them.

As for bigger ticket items, I've bought and sold stuff worth thousands on there before and NEVER had a problem. I started thinking last night and I think that my wife and I have bought and sold at least 5000 things on there in the past 3 years.

Everything from stuff that was $1 to $3000 computers.

I guess, as a musician, I've never been afraid of buying from strangers. That is how I've acquired some of my best music gear and how most musicians acquire theirs. Unless you HAVE to have a new piece of gear, it is a lot cheaper to buy something that is a year old, nearly new and 20 percent less.

The thing about electronics is that they de-value. A computer you buy today won't be worth the same amount a year from now. Is it still worth owning in a year? For most people it is.

If you just feel better buying new, I understand, but I prefer used stuff most of the time. It is almost always cheaper and is usally just as good as the new items. Plus, I don't get bugged to buy the extended warranty or freak out in 3 months when the price drops 25 percent in retail stores! [IMG]

It's not so much the "new vs. old" thing. Although I do prefer new stuff. It's more the "what the hell will I be getting when I get it" thing. I trust things bought from companies and with warranties, etc.

Oh, I'm sure my fear will eventually go away sometime down the road... after about 13-15 or so years on the Internet, I still can't believe I'm scared to buy from people online. Maybe it's just my mistrust of humans in general. lol! j/k. [IMG]
