There are plenty of bars and restuarants by the river. Good food and music. Go check out UT and the State house.

Depending on your musical or dining tastes your may also want to consider:

The Saxon Pub on S. Lamar - Good singer/songwriter venue with a neighborhood bar atmosphere. Sunday nights are particularly good.

The Oasis on Lake Travis - Decent food with a great view as you dine 300' over Lake Travis. Live music at a large outdoor venue usually has Blues on Thursday and Salsa on Sunday evenings.

The Steve Ray Vaughn statue and a stroll along Towne Lake.

The Shady Grove (SW Cuisine) or Chuy's (Tex-Mex) or Zilker Park and Botanical Gardens...all on Barton Springs.

You could pickup an Austin Chronicle at just about any restaurant, club or music store in town or use their website:

    http://www.austinchronicle.com/

    and also Austin 360:

Ya'all come back, ya hear! :)

UT and the State House? Yeah, and whenever you go up to Vegas, take a tour of the Hoover dam. :D

Chicken Fried Pork Chops from Threadgills would really hit the spot right now.

Cause I get different ones every time. However, today I'm feeling like mac and cheese and fried okra.

    Mmmm, hardening arteries.

It's my first trip back to my hometown since moving to Houston.

    I'm very excited!

If you're out at random bars on 4th Street Saturday night (my favorite is still The Ginger Man), look for the tall, dorky-looking lush (blabbering like a fool) with a group of friends embarassed for him.

If you are 25 you really need to hit the 4th Street/Warehouse area at 4th and Brazos. 6th street is for the 18 and up crowd and is way overrated. Lots of cool bars to hit in the Warehouse district. My favorites:

Speakeasy - great place for cover band music and dancing, cool patio on the roof. Lots of room.

Red Fez - gets crowded, but they always have a great DJ working it and the vibe is pretty good.

Antones - The place to be for live music. Steamroller is playing friday night - I'll probably be there.

I've gotten to where I prefer Hill's on S. Congress. I still dig the original Threadgills on N. Lamar, but the "new" one is too... something. Flashy? Touristy? I don't know.

For sure, if you can, go to the Salt Lick in Driftwood out 1826.
    Yummy BBQ!

Oasis has tremendous sunsets. Don't expect much from the food, however. But it's worth it and can be very romantic if Nature cooperates. :)

Some good suggestions in here. Enjoy!

I actually prefer Hoovers to both, but that particular dish was calling my name this morning.

Austin is not exactly that great of a tourist town. It's known for UT and the giant state house, plus Dell's money. It's just another small city that no one would come for vacation. But if you're here go check out the university and go see Dubya's portrait and look up at the star you communist. :D

And most of us residents are thankful for that since it's hard enough to get around w/o all the "turistas". ;) Let all the tourists go to HOU or SA or DAL...we'll just all stay here and be bored. :D
