I am trying to figure out Miami's situation as it pertains to a possible destination for Bosh. I challenge any cap savy fans to find a way to make this process better for the Heat. Miami Offseason: End of Season: Total Salary 2010-2011: $30,670,849 (Wade, Beasely, Jones, Cook, Anthony, Chalmers on contract) Chalmers / ??? Wade / Cook Jones / ??? Beasely / ??? Anthony / ??? NBA Draft: Lets say Miami selects Alabi and Babbit to fill holes. New salary: ~33 million Chalmers / ??? Wade / Cook Jones / Babbit Beasely / ??? Alabi / Anthony Free Agency: Lets say Miami contacts Bosh and gets him to commit. Toronto agrees to send Bosh for a trade exception and Alabi. New salary (+ 17.15 mil - 1.6 mil) = 48.55 million (8 players on contract) Chalmers / ??? Wade / Cook Jones / Babbit Bosh / Beasely Anthony / ??? Theres a minimum of 12 roster spots needed to field a team so we'll assume they pick up 4 d-leaguers at .8 k apieces. New salary: 52 million. At this point they are pretty much praying the cap is higher than 53 million. If its as high as 56 million, well they could get a few more d-leaguers to fill out a practice squad or they could get one average role player. They do not get the MLE since they used thier cap space. I feel like this is a fringe playoff team despite having the best 1-2 punch in the league. I suppose they could move Beasely somewhere for 2 roleplayers, but I think they would have to be bad contract type players. I can't envision Bosh or any other major free agent commiting to this team, depsite the draw of playing alongside Wade. Thoughts - Agree/Disagree ?
I'm not a capologist by a long shot, but you can go over the cap with minimum contracts so filling the roster won't be a problem. And if you sign old dudes, their full salary doesn't even count against the cap anyway. Of course, filling the roster with any quality remains the problem.
