From what I know, Shandon Anderson is from the Atlanta area. This may be a pipe dream so forgive me, but do you think there would be a way to sign and trade Anderson along with one or two others to the ATL for Theo Ratliff? I don't know what Ratliff is making so I do not know how this situation would work under the cap. Again, this may be completely out of the question, but just curious. ------------------ [This message has been edited by H-TOWN (edited May 28, 2001).]
Sounds good, but I would rather have Theo Ratliff! ------------------ The Protrolls.com message boards! Protrolls.com! Home of Turn, Tweak, and all your demented favorites!
I haven't been following the Hawks' situation, so what need does Shandon address for them? ------------------ "Light travels faster than sound, so some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak." -- Brian Williams (now Bison Dele) commenting on Isiah Thomas.
Good thinking. Tough to say if Atlanta would be interested. Atlanta didn't get much pub but they were seriously in the running for Shandon before he signed with Houston. The media only focused on Indiana, Houston and possibly Utah down the stretch, but Shandon made a few trips to Atlanta. He also loved Houston because it was "like his hometown Atlanta"... Question is would Atlanta want to give up Ratliff? I doubt it. They have Kukoc and DerMarr Johnson at 2-3... and Jason Terry may be more of a two as well. I don't know if they see the need for Shandon honestly. They're probably hoping for a center with that #3 pick. ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET
Atlanta seems to be lacking a defensive player at the 2 and 3. Anderson may be able to fill that role for them. ------------------
I'd love Ratliff on this team, but I don't see it happening. They definitely wouldn't want Shandon at small forward with Johnson on board. However, I don't see them going after a center. I see them going after Jason Richardson to play shooting guard, which would allow Jason Terry to move back to point guard. I would think they'd play Ratliff and Wright at the same time, because I doubt they payed Lorenzen 42 million dollars to come off the bench, but then again the Rockets did that with Cato. As for Theo's contract situation, I believe its a 6 or 7 year 86 million dollar deal he has. ------------------ [This message has been edited by tacoma park legend (edited May 28, 2001).]
I agree with you H-TOWN they need a big guard like Anderson who can provide good defense and off the bench offense but I seriously doubt that they would want to give up Theo Ratliff even if they got a center with the 3rd pick. ------------------
I suppose. But then from everything I've been reading around here, Shandon gets torched constantly by opposing players. Yes, he's guarding some of the best offensive talent in the league, but if he can't stop/slow them down, then I don't see the interest in him as "defensive stopper". This coming from me, who probably watched a total of about 4 Rocket games last year, so I'm no expert on his defense. I've never been a big fan of the "he's from there, so he'd love to go back there" philosophy. These guys make millions and can fly around wherever they want, whenever they want for the most part. I just can't imagine them giving up Ratliff for Shandon and one or two other players as you stated unless those one or two other players are good players. Remember Ratliff is one of the premiere shot blockers and defensive centers in the league. It took a Mutombo to get him. ------------------ "Light travels faster than sound, so some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak." -- Brian Williams (now Bison Dele) commenting on Isiah Thomas.
Clutch, you have a point about the Hawks looking for a center in the draft. Perhaps if they do not find a center, they may be interested in a deal including Cato, Anderson, and maybe Walt? Cato may be able to grow into that Center position for them especially since the Eastern Conference is lacking teams with big men. It would also fill them with a shot blocking presence that would ease their loss of Ratliff. As far as Walt goes, they could use him as a three point shooter to take advantage of the zone defense next year. To me, it may make sense for the Hawks, but some salary cap issues may stop this proposition short. ------------------
tpl-I was just about to say that. I don't think we'd be able to get Ratliff unless Ratliff demanded a trade, and Atlanta liked Cato and Shandon a whole lot. From what I've heard, the plan is for Jason Terry to man the SG position and find a big PG. I'd speculate something like #3+Brevin Knight to the Bulls for Jamal Crawford+#4. I think Atlanta looks for a PF. At center, they already have Ratliff, and Mohammed looked good. Ren Wright can play some center at 6'11'' 240 lb. At PF they have Alan Henderson and Ren Wright, not too good. In my mind, they take whoever is left between Kwame Brown, Eddy Curry, and Eddie Griffin. You could try throwing Cato, Shandon, and the #13 pick at them for Ratliff and see if they'll bite, but I don't think they will. Anything with Ratliff will probably also have Henderson, who has 4 years totalling 29.5 million left on his contract (6.5 next year) or Ren Wright latched on. A lesser Reeves in its own way. ------------------ "That's been a lifelong dream of mine." -Vince Carter, after laying it in on a breakaway, much to the Vancouver crowd's displeasure.
I'm seeing a 3 way trade between the Rockets, Miami, and Atlanta with Grant, Cato/Shandon and Ratliff being the main players involved. I don't know who the fillers would be though, but it is a possibility. I know that Miami has shown an interest in Shandon. ------------------
Could you imagine the Rockets if we acquired Ratliff, C-Webb, and Horry in the offseason? C - Ratliff PF - Webber SF - Horry SG - Mobley PG - Francis That is a dangerous starting five. I know that it is a big question mark if Atlanta parts with Ratliff, but I think that it is an option worth exploring for the Rockets. You never know Atlanta may go for it. If there is any team in the league that has the ability to aquire players that seem out of reach, it is the Rockets. ------------------
I doubt that Atlanta will trade any of their key components this offseason. They have plenty of solid young talent and have a 3rd overall pick coming up. I have read that they are intrigued by the possibility of drafting Eddie Griffin as he would form a nasty shotblocking duo with Theo Ratliff. The new rules esp the 8 sec crossing halfcourt will help their team tremendously as they will have quick ball handling guards in Knight and Terry that can apply pressure and wingmen in Johnson and Kukoc that also handle well. Long limbed players like Theo Ratiff and someone like Eddie Griffin (if they draft him) will help majorly in the defensive situations. If they really want Shandon, I would suspect they just pursue him with the middle class 4.5 mil exception, and if that isnt enough as Dan Fegan insinuated, just pass on him. ------------------ Check out the Best Source for Draft Info Draftsource.net [This message has been edited by MManal (edited May 28, 2001).]
I don't believe the Hawks even have a 4.5 million exception. I think their exception is more in the 2.2 million range, which makes the possibility of them acquiring Shandon that much less likely. ------------------
tpl-Everyone over the cap has the 4.5 mill exception. It's the mid-level exception that takes the place of the old 2.25 exception. ------------------ "That's been a lifelong dream of mine." -Vince Carter, after laying it in on a breakaway, much to the Vancouver crowd's displeasure.
Dr of Dunk: Shandon is a great defensive shooting guard, with all around game that works 99 percent of the shooting guards in the league on both sides of the court, but when you plug him in at small forward he will get lit up because of his size. I mean I remember him shutting down Michael Finley, Stackhouse, Iverson, and even Kobe...but our obvious future at shooting guard has been claimed by Cuttino, so... who know, he would probably love to go to Atlanta, and would make a good backcourt with Terry at the point. pg: Terry sg: Shandon sf: kukoc pf: mohammed/or wright center: draft/or moho I guess they would have to take Cato if we were to get Ratlif, and unless they get some good production in the center and power forward position that would be worth giving away theo...I don't know if we could get him. but that backcourt and small forward spot look real nice. ------------------ -jbond77
jbond77, Hmm... that's what I get for making comments about games I don't watch, but hey I warned you. I forgot that he does play out of position for the most part. ------------------ "Light travels faster than sound, so some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak." -- Brian Williams (now Bison Dele) commenting on Isiah Thomas.
