Finally got to go to this place years after reading the legendary Sports Illustrated article featuring Yao, Ewing, and Mutombo. Pimping my review here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/yao-restaurant-and-bar-houston#hrid:AvMpGKH_yItaNJNEeYQ96w
The mongolian beef and Yao's Shrimp are both incredible dishes. Also, the lettuce wraps and chicken egg rolls are good. I dont eat duck, but have heard their Peking Duck is very good as well. Moe
Yeah. Details, details. Dudes, I can't believe all the hate I'm hearing. This place is a bomb experience. They've got a basketball here from Ryan freaking Bowen. I was stoked when I saw that.
The food isn't as good for the price you pay, at most it's decent. The one time I went (Downtown location) it was practically empty (at 9pm-ish) and my waitress was beyond rude, smacking her gum at every word and never refilled my group's drinks. The service was terrible and it took forever for them to bring out our food and give us the check at the end of the night. I want to try out the Westheimer location to see whether or not I'll have the same experience.
I was gonna try it once, years ago when Yao was still the centerpiece of our team. But then we opted for the Hooters nearby and watch the game from there.
I've only been there once (downtown location) and it was lunchtime. I tried typical Americanized Chinese fare... General Tsos. It was very ho hum. Maybe the more traditional food would be better. Oddly enough, the one thing that really stood out to me was the decoration of the place though. Very cheap quality stuff. From menus on up. There was a big picture of Yao (of course) and one of Luis Scola. Instead of a plaque at the bottom with their name, etc, it was printed on a small strip of paper (unlaminated) and scotch taped onto the outside of the glass. So it ended up being wrinkled and dirtied. Just looked real cheap.
I'm pretty sure the downtown location was on the new for a bad inspection...can't remember the problem. i think food was bad due to incorrect temperature...
