It's finally here in full version, Mac OS X! ------------------ Ceo of the Walt Williams and Lisa Malosky fan club. atheistalliance.org

My copy will be here Monday! Can't wait!!! I downloaded iTunes and it rocks. By the way, Dean, if you get a CD-R/RW, make sure the mechanism in it is one that is compatible. There is a list at http://www.apple.com/itunes/compatibility/ . I found out the hard way that mine didn't work. Fortunately, QPS agreed to take it as a "repair" and send me one that is compatible. I just got a new iBook the other day (the DV model) - it rocks! And, if you haven't picked up the harman/kardon sound sticks, DO IT. They are killer! ------------------ "I swallowed a lot of agression...along with a lot of pizzas."

It is UNIX, with Mac Purtiness on top of it. It should be extremely solid and never hang, unlike all the other Mac OS's ever. You will finally have real virtual memory, woo hoo. [This message has been edited by heypartner (edited March 24, 2001).]
OS X won't run on the Mac that I have, so I guess I'm on the outside looking in on this one. (Not that my Mac does anything but prop open doors any more, anyway). ------------------ Houston Sports Board Help Finance My Movie - Buy A T-Shirt or Make a Donation
You know heyP that the amount I know about UNIX systems could fit a leaflet the size of a thumbnail (and that's being generous ), but I read a "dummies guide" for lack of a better term recently how OSX works with regard to virtual memory and a few other key functions and I have to admit that I was impressed. I am a ridiculous Mac lover, so I am biased. But, I've worked on Windows and DOS systems A LOT in the past and I understand their advantages over Mac and vice versa. OSX is a real attempt (I'm not sure it will be perfect the first time around) at moving Mac out of the graphics/page layout/music and "toy" category of computers. Plus, it is purty. ------------------ "I swallowed a lot of agression...along with a lot of pizzas."
Jeff I thought you had better taste then to buy one of those but ugly ibooks. BTW: have you guys seen the new iMacs? the one that looks like somebody just threw some paint at it. ------------------ ~John~ If you make it idiot proof, they will make a better idiot.
Do the good consumer apps run native in OS X yet? Last I heard, you had to run stuff like Photoshop in a subsystem that emulates the old-style MacOS. Then, that subsystem is no better than old-style MacOS, so your Photoshop still leaks, crashes and thrashes. Even though the underlying OS X is super stable, an app like Photoshop has to run in a flakey emulator. Maybe there's already an OS X native Photoshop? Right now seems like it is just an awesome OS for servers...
jammie, duh, of course you are right about that. So I guess the virtual memory will just stop the emulator sessions from crashing each other...lol! As far as your Adobe example goes though, don't forget that Adobe has some of the most solid virtual memory management in the business. Considering Adobe products all use their own virtual memory, they are generally solid on their own. I've also been told that Adobe bypasses OS-based parallel processing and parallel's directly...they never liked NT's insistence on going through the OS. Also, Photoshop and Illustrator have always had UNIX versions from day one. So, that conversion should be easy for Adobe. Adobe rox. I'm pretty sure Mac would not release the OS without giving Adobe a huge headstart on conversion. Of course, you'll have to upgrade your Adobe products. Do you have a PC? You mean to tell me that a beige box is better looking than an iMac??? Remind me not to ask you for wardrobe or interior decorating advice! Actually, I have been a Mac fan since I first tried them when I was in grade school and have used them for page layout, graphics and music production, the three things they do better than any PC ever could. My iBook was a business purchase. I can take it to jewelry shows, hook up my digital video camera to the fire wire port, crank up iMovie and play instructional videos (buying and pricing jewelry, etc) right there for customers on a VERY stylish-looking machine. I can also hit the net in the evenings to check mail, etc. By the way, guys. I don't plan on putting OS X on my primary machine first. I'm going to run it on the iBook first and test it on a slower Mac I have - I actually have 3 iMacs (my gray 500mhz iMac DV is the one I am using to type this), and iBook and a Dell (yes, a PC!) though it is for sale. As for the new iMacs, my wife LOVES the paint splashed one. I, for one, am glad someone finally decided to make a machine that looked good on a desktop. I've read stories about companies that converted all their desktops in view of customers to iMac's while using PC's for specific tasks in the back - kinda the reverse of before. The Win environment just doesn't realy appeal to me. I've worked on them many many times at work and I just really prefer Macintosh. To each his own! ------------------ "I swallowed a lot of agression...along with a lot of pizzas."
Im sure this Apple has plenty of worms. ------------------ Nice guys finish last ... and im surely not going to finish last!
Jeff I agree with you that Macs are a lot better for publishing work and graphics, but I still prefer the look of my black Dell Laptop. I just think it looks more professional, some of the higher end Macs look nicer then those tacky imacs. ------------------ ~John~ If you make it idiot proof, they will make a better idiot.
Jeff I agree with you that Macs are a lot better for publishing work and graphics, but I still prefer the look of my black Dell Laptop. I just think it looks more professional, some of the higher end Macs look nicer then those tacky imacs. Well, tackiness is in the eye of the beholder. I think a suit and tie looks professional but you won't get me into one unless I'm at a funeral or wedding! I didn't even wear a tie at MY OWN wedding - just a suit not designed for one. The only suit I own now is from Sears!!! LOL! For the purpose of selling beautiful things (in our case, jewelry), you don't want some black or gray thing sitting up there on the counter. A funky iBook looks much more stylish. Why do you think they are used in the backgrounds of commercials, tv shows and movies? The props person doesn't care one iota about how fast or professional it is. He/she is looking for something stylish. By the same token, why do you think they make everything from toothbrushes to vacuum cleaners in "iMac blue" now? Like I said, beauty and tackiness are in the eye of the beholder. I will say this, I do like the the nicer Dell's. They are pretty damn cool. ------------------ "I swallowed a lot of agression...along with a lot of pizzas."
I have an original bondi-blue iMac. I like the color and look of it and the latest ones, though my next computer purchase will be a G4 tower. The most awesome-est looking computer has to be the new Titanium Powerbook G4. I never thought I would really want a laptop, but that thing is so cool. ------------------ "We got f*cking smashed every day. And then when we came here to Beverly Hills, we had drugs, we had chicks, we had orgies. I thought I'd died and gone to f*cking Rome" ---Ozzy Osbourne, on the early days of Black Sabbath
And y'all pay how much for these interior design elements called IMacs? lol. I guess different people have different needs. I need a pc laptop to do work at home. None of the God-knows-how-many companies I've worked for use Apples (or at least not openly... lol), so it wouldn't do me any good to buy one. I've been tempted to get one just for the hell of it since I started computing with an Apple //e. ------------------ "We need a chicken butt." -- heypartner is moving swiftly to help make the CC.net BBS more efficient and run faster.
