I posted this in the College Corner under a MING ROY thread, but got no answers in 4 days. Maybe I can get some here. I have a question for you long time basketball fans. How much does winning factor into ROY voting. Let's say this happends: Jay Williams: 22ppg 7apg 2spg Yao: 14ppg 9rpg 2bpg Jay's team gets maybe 30 or so wins. Yao's team goes to the WCF, where Yao holds Shaq to 20ppg (that's right, holding to 20) while averaging 17ppg 10rpg, and 2.5bpg in the WCF. The Rockets win the series and the championship. (basically, this would be the championship.) So Yao avgs 8 less ppg than Jay, and isn't the team leader, but he and the Rocket's win the championship. He also does well against Shaq. Would he get the nod over Jay? BTW, I don't think any of this will happend, it is just a "what if" question.
Well, if (BIG if) that scenario were to happen, then most likely Ming would win ROY, with j Williams coming in #2. However, sweet as it would be for that to happen, it won't. Stick it under the bed with Nastajia Kinski and all the other pipe-dreams. Ciao
isn't the ROY handed out before the playoffs are finished? With those numbers Jay would probably win it, unless Ming gets most of his stats by dominating after all-star break.
I think they are, too. But I would assume they may think about postponing it if the playoffs are a factor. Especially if they are real close. Well, that's what I would do. They would probably cheat us again, and when Yao does well, they would feel bad.
I don't know if Yao will have the chance to post the numbers that usually impress voters. If his impact is tremendous (and by that, of course, I don't mean the resounding thud that so many anticipate) then he will have a chance. But he'll probably be playing no more than 26 mpg. I'd say the early favorites are DeJuan Wagner and Jason Williams.
I agree, but I didn't post this as a "Would Yao get ROY?" but a what-if (big if) ROY question that has Yao putting up the numbers above. If it was a ROY question, I totally agree with you. IMO, Yao will probably get around 10ppg and 10rpg. Just wondered how much winning and playoffs mean to it.
i don't think that the playoffs are even taken in as deciding figures as to who wins ROY. win/loss is somwhat a factor but not always necessary...as elton brand demonstrated in his rookie year.
Wake up and smell the coffee, ROY is soley based on individual stats. When Steve and Elton won, the Rockets and Bulls didn't make the playoffs, when K-Mart or Marc Jackson should have won, the nets and the Warriors sucked ass( Mike Miller didnt' deserve ROY), and this past year, Pau Gasol won it while playing for the Grizz. It's all about stats.
Pipe dreams are supposed to be big. How about Anna Kournikova? Its going to take bigtime stats for Ming to win ROY. Mainly because JWill will get more minutes than Ming and will be one of their main weapons while Ming will a compliment player his 1st year.
Roy is usually the #1 pick in a weak team. He becomes the team primary weapon in a hurry and take most of the shots coz no one else in the team can do the job. Doesn't look like Ming will be in that situation. Actually people have been talking about there are not going to be enough shots for everyone in this Rockets team.
If Jay is within 2pts per game on average and Ming plays a type of game that has never been seen in the NBA, then I think he will be considered for ROY.
