McNair, Young close on, off field

Titans QB watched protege at Rose Bowl

    By JIM WYATT
    Staff Writer

Vince Young was in junior high when Titans quarterback Steve McNair met him, and over the years their relationship has grown.

They've been friends through good times and bad. It's safe to say Wednesday night in Pasadena, Calif., was probably the best.

With McNair in the stands watching, Young quarterbacked the Texas Longhorns to a national championship with a 41-38 victory over USC in the Rose Bowl. Young accumulated 467 yards of total offense, including 200 on the ground, and was named the game's MVP.

"It has been a pleasure watching him mature as a player and as a person in the many years that I have known him,'' McNair said last night. "He is what an NFL quarterback is all about in this day and age. He can beat you with his arms or his legs and has the leadership abilities required of an NFL quarterback.

"He has proven that he is one of the best college quarterbacks in the country, and I would expect him to continue to be one of the best at the next level.''

McNair went to college at Alcorn State with Young's uncle, Ivory Young. Later, Ivory recommended that his nephew attend McNair's football camp in Mississippi. Vince Young was a high school sophomore at the time.

Over the years they have regularly talked on the phone, and Young has spent time at the Mississippi home of McNair's mother. McNair has attended a number of Young's games at Texas, and in recent years Young has been an instructor at McNair's camp.

In an interview with The Tennessean in June, Young said he sometimes refers to McNair as "Big Papa.'' Young's own father hasn't been around for a good part of his son's life, and has spent time in a penitentiary.

"Steve is like a father figure to me,'' Young told The Tennessean. "He helped inspire me and helped me grow up and become a man. He has always been there for me.''

McNair's guidance over the years hasn't been a secret to Longhorn fans, something that was evident as the Titan made his way into the Rose Bowl on

    Nice article.

Steve McNair is my favorite football player and has been underrated IMO. Hopefully he can restructure his contract with the Titans and play a few more years and compete for a title.

When I watched the game on Wed night, it reminded me of McNair in his younger years in the NFL. He amazing plays in that superbowl against the Rams but just came up short (inches).

VY is sick and is going to be great because he has it all- the leadership, poise, desicion making, spead, pretty good arm and is just a freak!

It would make me happier if he left the Titans. Then he would stop torturing the Texans every time they play.

Nope. Sounds like the Titans might pay a pretty price to get the first pick.

^ They probably won't have to. ESPN is reporting that we are gonna take Bush, NO has made it pretty well known that they like Leinart, and the Titans pick 3rd.

The thought of VY being coached by both Chow and McNair is scary.

VY is one of the very few players I will follow closely in the NFL wherever he plays. The Titans would be fine. They have a good coaching staff and Steve McNair could be the ideal mentor for VY. I would become a big Titans fan.

I sure hope the Saints don't take VY. What a tragedy that would be.

If the Titans would offer their 2nd round to draft Young, the Saints would be fools to pass on it. Obviously, this would be extreme. Perhaps a 3rd and 4th.

If I was Tennessee, I would offer a 3rd. If they don't accept there are still plenty of options for Tenn. I wonder if Tenn is up on Leinart, if they don't get Young. Perhaps they could trade down and get an extra pick.

Either way, the first 3 picks stand to gain. The only one losing is the player that goes to NO.

Tennesse gave up their 3rd for Travis Henry. Oops... that looks like a bad move now.

see, i'd be fine with that. the saints have been one of the few teams i've rooted for consistently..they were MY team after the oilers left town. that would be tons easier for me than the titans.

This would be the 1st step in thawing the hating icy heart I have toward the traitors

I was a die hard oiler fans
which make hatred of the titans a must

If they get VY . . .. I will start having an interest again in that team
    owned by that man

Can't begin to tell you how happy I am feeling right now... I am crossing my fingers that the Titans are fortunate enough to draft Vince Young. It is all that I am praying for come draft day. Actually since I was watching that Vince Young final drive in the Rose Bowl.

As a Titan fan that final Vince Young drive reminded me so much of the final drive that Steve McNair orchestrated in the Super Bowl. If they had gotten that last yard that drive would have become legendary and put into the NFL archives. Actually, it did for me anyways. But Vince reminded me so much of a young McNair. That fact that they are comparing Vince to Vick is a freaking joke. I think he reminds me of a young McNair.

The Titans are an absolute perfect fit for Vince Young. He will not be thrown out to the wolves. McNair would redo his contract (which is already in the works). McNair is not leaving the Titans... I think he would actually find it priceless to play with Young and one day hand over the leadership to Vince. I could actually see McNair being the back-up # 2 once Vince becomes the starter. I think McNair has another good year as the starter. Plus with McNair injury status Young would get playing time.

In addition, I think you will see Volek traded this offseason for draft picks to make up for the loss of our 3rd round pick given to the Bills.

Young to the Titans would be a great fit. Unfortunately, the Texans would have to face him twice a year, which would be fun and crappy at the same time.
