http://www.villagevoice.com/specials/pazznjop/01/ The annual Village Voice music poll is out for 2001. Album of the year: Bob Dylan, "Love and Theft." Single of the year: "Get Ur Freak On," Missy Elliot This is pretty exhaustive survey of most of the music critics in the country. I have got into some pretty cool music from reading this. Two great underground hip-hop recommendations: The Coup and Cannibal Ox. The former are of the Public Enemy mode of discourse (song title, for example: "5 million ways to kill a C.E.O.") and have a really funky and inventive backbeat. Cannibal Ox are hip-hop with the spirit of "Amnesiac." Trippy beats without being "trip-hop." The Pernice Brothers are a rock band that I had never heard of before that I have got into after reading this list. Check them out, too. Did I mention how great Audiogalaxy is?
Thanks for the recommendations, Elvis. You should check out Phoenix Orion. I use Morpheus and his stuff is hard to find. Hopefully you'll have better luck with AG.
