Jason Williams is clearly IMO one of the most overrated players in the NBA. University (Who Is John Galt?) Blue has a different opinion and has taken offense to any negative post from me about Jason Williams. Therefore I will be posting Jason William Updates from now to the end of the season starting with last nights game against the Knicks.

This is not meant to be a thread bashing Jason Williams or University Blue, just something to have a little fun with since University Blue and myself have such dissenting opinions on Jason Williams. University Blue is not only welcome but invited to participate.

BTW, when Jason Williams has a good game it will be recognized and praised by me.

Now onto the first Jason Williams update.

    Feb 25, New York 88 Sac 86.
"New York AP– Jason Williams gave no explanation for what happened on the final play of the game, which was fitting in a way because his miss was so inexplicable."

That pretty much sums up the poor performance that Jason Williams had through out the game. His stats were as follows:

    34 min 1-6 shooting 3 boards 3 assists 1 steals 2 fouls 1 turnover and 2pts

What else can I add to that except that this came during a game that the Kings really needed him to step up with the absence of C-Webb.

Someone please remind me why this guy is on NBA commercials and why he got so many All Star votes.

He is an exciting player who at least to soem extent has made those around him better. He is one of the top 3 most gifted passers in the league (Kidd is still on top, IMO). He is also a sreaky shooter, ala Walt Williams. He will have games where he is 8-12 and hitting impossible shots and other games where he will be 1-7.
He is raw. He is more like a street ball player than a refined player but he makes the game interesting.
To summarize he makes the games fun to watch and I still argue he has made his teammates better (witnessed by Webber being now mentioned as the best playe rin the NBA, the Kings going to the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row this year and for a chunk of this year having the best record, Divac making his 1st all-star game, Petro emerging as a NBA force). Yes he makes silly plays but give him credit.
I am a Rocket fan but I would much rather watch a Kings game with J-W running the fast break with Webber on the wing, than watching the PNR with Cat or Francis. The Kings play an exciting style for the regulkar season, but they haven't proven they can't win in the post-season.

Comparing J-Dubb to Walt is no compliment for J-Dubb.

When he has a good game I intend to sing his praise. But we will see how often that happens

And I gotta tell ya, the Rockets have been pretty exciting since Dream started playing. They score over a hundred during most games now. IMHO Steve Francis high flying dunks are more exciting than anything J-Dubb brings to the table.

Here is Jason Williams stats for the year.

    2000-01 Statistics
    REBOUNDS
G GS MPG FGM-A FG% 3PM-A 3P% FTM-A FT% OFF DEF TOT APG STL BLK TO PF PPG

Ranks #19 in the NBA in Assists Per Game(5.3)

I wasn't trying to compare Walt to J-W as a compliment to J-W, but rather as an example of his shooting style (hot-cold, no middle ground).
And for the assist thing J-W averages 5.3 assists in 30.5 minutes/game. Stevie averages 6.2 in 39.7. Extending J-W to 39.7/game would put him at 6.89/game.
Yeah Stevie is a better player but the Kings need someone to set the table for their offense, someone to run and to keep Webber happy.
Statistically J-W doesn't look like a very good player, but he helps the Kings win and he helps the NBA by making it exciting, so he will be hyped for his passes.

Let me re-post a previous sentiment.

    Monday, February 26, 2001.

Jason Williams is/will be a better player than Jason Kidd.

Hey University Blue nice to see you post. I hope you will add your comments as the season comes to an end. Feel free to brag a little when J-Dubb does well. Were just having a little fun with this thread. [IMG]

Jason Williams will never be as good as Jason Kidd, not even in one of his wildest dreams.

The Sacramento Kings have such a hard-core fan base , I listen to the Kings games on KHTK because its either them or the Lakers. An NBA point Guard needs time to mature , Stephon Marbury was always good , but now he is a superstar , Eric Snow and Chris Whitney were nobodys who played on Playoff teams for the first years of their careers , now they are relevent parts to team chemistry . Jason Williams had so much potential , and with the Fans in Sac-Town , who hadnt had a good draft pick since Walt Williams [IMG] , He made everyone ooo and ahh with crazy passes . He would pull up for a 33 foot three on the fast break and sink it 2 out of 5 times . Now the people of Sacramento want a Guard who can run the team and produce consistency not flair , And who would that be? Bobby Jackson .

I am very serious. Jason Williams (Sacramento) is/will be better than Jason Kidd. Which is not saying much because Kidd is not that good.

Before Kidd-jockers get their boxers twisted in solar grizzle knots, let me explain.

Kidd is above-average, not great. Over-hyped? It's Jason..................Kidd. Smart defensive teams will render him in-effective. We'll see in the playoffs -- if Phoenix makes it.

"But he distributes the ball and is un-selfish." Translation: He can't score and gets baskets on un-suspecting defenses (waiting for his next pass).

"But he made the All-Star team." So did Alonzo Mourning and Grant Hill.

If by that you mean they share a first name, you're right.

Next to Allan Houston, Jason Williams has one of the sweetest shots in the league.

Jason Williams - loaded with talent and ability, one of the best ballhandlers I have seen come around in a long time, GREAT court vision, but has NOT YET developed the court smarts and maturity to become a consistently effective player.

Only time will tell, but U. Blue, your assessment of Jason Kidd is way off. I understand and see your bias towards Williams, but be fair in assessing Kidd, who is truly the premier passer in the league right now, and is very effective in running the Phoenix offense. His end to end court speed is also amazing. Sure, his jumper is suspect at times, but he has greatly improved since coming into the league.

Well here's my next J-Dubb update. The Kings won the game against the Clipps 106-93.

"The Kings, who have won four of five games, made all six field-goal attempts and went 3-for-3 from the free-throw line in overtime. Bobby Jackson and Divac both scored six points in the extra period.-Sacramento, Calif (AP)"

There is absulutely no mention of J-Dubb in the games recap. However, Bobby Jackson the teams backup Point Guard came up big in O.T. as you can see by the take from the Associated Press.

    J-Dubbs stats for the game:
6pts 6assist and 1rebound no steals or turnovers and 2 for 7 shooting in 27 minutes of play.

Not exactly steller. 6 assists is not bad and no turnovers is exellent but there is not much else to say. 2 of 7 shooting is not exceptable and no real contribution anywhere else.

Now here are Bobby Jacksons stats:
    16pts 3boards 1assist 1steal 1turnover 6 for 6 shooting in 26 minutes of play.

Now Jacksons stats are not exactly great for a point guard but 16pts on 6 of 6 shooting are great and the guy was clutch during over time. I don't know if Jackson is really good enough to be any more than good back up but it is possible that he may be better than J-Dubb. Court is in session.

Hey J-Dubb do you feel that hot air on your back? Thats Bobby Jackson breathing down your neck. You are loosing your minutes now and maybe your starters job soon. [IMG]

J-Dubbs shot might not find the net as often as Allen Houstons but it sure looks sweet before it clanks off of the front of the rim! [IMG]
