Bring back the underhand sling pass! Check out this highlight reel of Pistol Pete Maravich. Surprisingly, the underhand pass dominates. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aDy8BqEuyE&feature=related This guy was just fun to watch. Lots of other related videos on his career, too.
#1: defenders play the passing lane now, a bounce pass is harder to steal #2: an overhand pass incorporates the rotator cuff giving wider range of passing opportunities #3: side passes are more evident as defenders can jump higher these days, but wingspan and side to side movement seem to have diminishing gains over the years
I don't think that technique is as important when you have the advantage of great vision and creativity. Lots of those passes were right off the dribble and some were truly blind. Man, he was fun to watch. I was but a young teenager in Pete's heyday, but I got me a pair of floppy socks and low-cut Chucks and went and broke into gyms to play ball after we got a chance to see Pete on TV. Thrilling.
