I think they're both great bands..... ...but I had to vote "they both suck!".... .....when compared to Led Zep.
Both of these bands are in my all-time top 5 along with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and the Eagles. With that being said, I have NEVER cared for the Stones; therefore, I picked the Beatles.
People who like the Beatles tend to like old school rock'n'roll (Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Beach Boys, etc..) while those who would pick the Stones gravitate more toward Jazz and Blues.
The Stones are way cooler but the Beatles transcend this kind of question. They're in the air. They're like an elemental force. As much as I listened to the Beatles when I was younger, now when I want to hear them I just call up a song in my head and listen to it note for note. So they get my vote. If The Who was in this poll I'd have to vote for them just out of personal preference, even though 'objectively' I'd say the Beatles and Stones are both better bands and more influential. Beatles and Stones are kind of apples and oranges though. Stones vs. The Who, Kinks vs. The Who and Rush vs. Van Halen are more telling questions. Dylan vs. Bruce is a good one too, though I've got nothing more to say to anyone who'd take Bruce in that poll.
You NEED to have LED ZEPPELIN on there. As it is, I'd take The Beatles over the Stones, but Led Zep way ahead of both.
Both great bands...I actually picked the Stones, but I can't listen to just them... There are times, I'm in the mood for some Beatles (late 60's, early 70's)...
Queen was the best band ever. But where would they be without the Beatles? The Beatles had such a tremedous impact on music and culture.
While I like old school rock 'n' roll, I love old school Blues music. Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, to name a few. Imagine if the Beatles had never conquered America. You would never have heard of the Rolling Stones. A British band playing American blues music? This would never have gone over if the Beatles hadn't created the interest in so called "British Music."
I'd say that's not true by half. It's more like the other way around. I'm a huge jazz fan, but I still love listening to the Beatles. As for the Stones, they wrote some great pop tunes, but they are definitely not groundbreaking like the Beatles were. The Beatles changed music forever and that's why jazz guys like pianist Brad Meldhau cover Beatle tunes.
