after reading trade proposals for months now, ive decided to let you all know the trade the rockets will actually make. no, its not going to involve the backcourt. its going to be glen rice and kelvin cato for brian grant and laphonso ellis. the reasons for both teams are obvious. hope you guys like the decision. enjoy.

Grant his a hardworking PF. Good player.

Ellis has had injury problems. But, so has Rice. Ellis was good player in Denver. We'll have to see. But I like Grant. Not sure I would want to give up Cato from our bench. I wounder if it has to do with cap room (Cato's contract).

Don't care if this trade rumor is true or not. Just want to make the team better...

Nope. If Grant had one year remaining on his contract then I would consider it, but he's got FOUR! No way you take on that ridiculous contract for that long.

This deal would make total sense. The Rice for Ellis deal is really just cap money for cap money. Ellis is a free agent after NEXT season just like Rice, so that makes sense.

This deal would actually be a Cato for Grant swap which would be just fine by me. It gives us a low post physical presence to play the four and the 5. It is a balance for Mo who is predominantly a scorer and gives time for Griffin to develop. And unlike Kenny Thomas, Taylor or Griffin, Grant can legitimately back up at center meaning, even as a bench player, he would get minutes because his time would be spread over two positions.

Frankly, it makes a lot of sense.

I wasn't sure about the cap issue. But, good...

And yes, I forgot that Grant can play the 5 too.

Well, it would definitely put us in worse cap shape. Right now we would have Rice for one more year and then we would have approximately 9 million freed, where with Ellis we would only have about 3 million freed at the end of the 2003-2004 season. So we lose there.

Then, you compare Grant and Cato. After this season we'd be paying Cato about 6 mil for the next 3 years, and with Grant we'd be paying over 10 mil for the next 4 years! We lose there too. He makes almost twice as much as Cato!

I thought we were trying to avoid bad contracts, and Grant's is probably one of the top 5 worst in the league. The fact that it goes all the way through 2007 makes it even less desirable. I think this could be a good trade for the present, but an absolutely terrible trade for the future.

That really depends. If the Rockets feel like Grant can be a productive player for the next 5 years, adding to the cap isn't an issue at all. Unless the Rockets really feel like they NEED to be a big player in free agency, and I don't think they do, there is no need for them to be concerned with their cap figure.

With the money they have committed to Francis, Taylor and others along with the money they will likely shell out for Posey and the money they will earmark for Yao, they won't probably be under the cap for years. But, if they believe they have the kind of players that will bring them a championship or they feel like they can trade to acquire them, free agency is irrelevant.

Yep. At least! It'll probably be up to around 15 million by the time he's on his last year. He pretty much has a max contract I believe. 7 years/85.64 million.

I don't know Jeff. I'm thinking this would give the Rockets the biggest payroll in the league in a couple of years. We're talking 3 max contracts (Grant, Francis, Ming), 4 significant contracts (Moochie, Taylor, Mobley, Posey). Not to mention if Griffin ends up being better than Taylor or Grant, I don't see how we have any chance of resigning him too.

I'm pretty sure that Les wants to win a championship, but I don't know if he'd be willing to at that cost.

Damn! I really like his game. Good rebounder too.

    Oh well...

I'd take Grant. But Brand is my fav still.

Can you imagine the beat-down Yao would get in practice? He'd never make it to a game. ;)

Actually, Grant is a great fit but that contract's a cap albatross.

That would be a wonderful trade for the Rockets. Brian Grant is a hard-nosed, rugged PF that would fit in perfectly.

Cato can do all of the defense and rebounding things that Grant does now. All that would really be upgraded is his offense. Since we have Francis, Mobley, Ming, and to a lesser extent Posey and Griffin in the starting lineup, not to mention guys like Taylor, Rice, Norris, and maybe someday Nachbar of the bench, we don't need that much in the way of scorers. I think this team has all the personnel necessary to win. We need to give Ming and Griffin time to develop. The talent level spread between front and backcourt has championships written all over it.

This thread is typical of what is wrong with the NBA. Who cares about the money? Grant is a great player, and he would fit the team perfectly.
