Before I go any further, anyone reading must download one of the following: http://tallah.org/video/mgs4.wmv http://rapidshare.de/files/5151155/mgs4.wmv.html http://s44.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0R6J7JY51DY383A5TK8LYJ94GW Hideo Kojima shows once again why he is so awesome. Expect a direct-feed version soon; that should be even more impressive. In this thread, we can discuss anything going on at TGS. For those that don't know, TGS is like the E3 of Japan, so there is some great stuff here. I'll start it off with some of the things I know about, but feel free to add in anything else I missed. Just in case you want those DMC4 and MGS4 scans again, here are some links (should still work, I think): http://s45.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1X8B41S340CP13C8O6OT5W0BNO http://s45.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1JPQS0GLXQN2C2ITI6VF5PM23A I think IGN should have some screens of MGS4 as well. Next, a list of the PS3 games at TGS: http://222.122.42.71/tgs/16/img/ps3/ruliweb_ps3s_02.jpg RR6 impressions from GS: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/driving/ridgeracer6/preview_6133385.html Polyphone Digital (Gran Turismo people) will be making a motorcycle game: http://www.gametab.com/news/367598/ For Xbox 360 media, just go to http://www.xboxyde.com/index_en.html Any stuff I try to link to will probably have links there as well (not to mention they may be the ONLY site with the link). I think they just put up a RR6 clip, and they recently put up a COD2 clip, a GoW clip, and Ninety Nine Nights clip. Just check out the site the next day or so for some media, be it from the Xbox 360 or the PS3; as you can probably tell, the site is primarily a XB site, but they'll occasionally have stuff on other systems as well. And most of you have probably seen this, but since it is pretty important, I'll post the link to the Xbox 360 release date again (Nov 22 for NA): http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/15/t...9285a6183eb229&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss And with that, I'm going to bed. Should be a great day tomorrow. A direct-feed MGS4 would be all I need.
that video, very poor quality, of MGS4 looked really cool. I never really got into the game in the past and haven't played more than 20min of it. But I will head out and get a copy of the old game to try it out.
When people were saying "in game" footage, I thought they meant gameplay. That was a great looking cut scene, still waiting for what the graphics will look like.
Wow. There have been a TON of game announcements, primarily for the PS3. I'll try to post some of the new stuff (again, mostly PS3-related). I'm just going to post some links to a bunch of IGN articles about game announcements. To summarize it a bit, basically Alone in the Dark, KOF, Gradius, Makai Wars (originally for the PSP), Armored Core, Brothers in Arms, and a few other titles (some original) were announced for the PS3 (and in some cases, the Xbox 360 as well). Here's some links to those: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651402p1.html http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651400p1.html http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651384p1.html http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651381p1.html http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651371p1.html http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651369p1.html http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651366p1.html http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651365p1.html http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651362p1.html http://ps3.ign.com/articles/651/651350p1.html IGN has some screens of a few games as well. There is a new Vision GT clip available, although it isn't too much different than the last one except for the first minute or so. Here's a link to find it: http://ruliweb.dreamwiz.com/data/rulinews/read.htm?num=13866 I also just found a link to 3 next-gen Capcom games (including DMC4), although I've haven't finished downloading it yet. Here it is though: http://xboxvideos3.free.fr/videos/prescapcom_tgs2005.wmv BTW, speaking of Konami and Capcom, they may eventually become one: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000101&sid=a31Bxym5Bqtc&refer=japan Also, they will be showing the FF7 Tech Demo again at TGS in the Sony theatre, along with MGS4 (long version, which I guess we haven't seen), and a mix of PS3 games. Not sure when that is though, but I'm surprised they are still showing it, if you know what I mean. Finally, there may be at least one PSP game that looks fun and..um..unique I guess would be the word. Check out this clip: http://momodomo.com/locoroco.wmv
I will be completely honest here and say that the MGS4 trailer isn't as good graphically as the Killzone2 trailer but its pretty damn close. In defense of MGS4, its all real time using the actual PS3 development kit while Killzone2 was pre-rendered/cgi in which the team had admitted to recently. What the MGS4 trailer shows us is that, its possible to have something as good looking as Killzone to played on the PS3 in real time. The Killzone team recently said that they got some new footage of Killzone running on an early PS3 dev kit in which they said looks just as good as the cgi version that debuted at E3. I can't wait to see this new one from Gurreilla and I really hope it looks just as good they say. We'll see.....
Just out of curiosity, do you have a link to that? I remember hearing that, not thinking much of it since it made sense, and then never thought about it again. But not too long ago, I read someone messed with some Killzone 1 interviews to make it sound like they were saying the KZ demo was prerendered. I never could fine that link or another one saying it was or wasn't; not that I dug that deep since I didn't really care, but that was interesting. I've always either thought of it as a sped up version of what they had running, or a prerendered video of what they should be able to do. I didn't really care what it was as long as they thought it was possible; whether it was possible was another story, but I was willing to take their word for it at the time.
http://www.ps3updates.com/2005/09/ps3-killzone-now-runs-in-real-time.html#comments PS3 Killzone Now Runs In Real-Time Like E3 Demo Source:GameGeekNews "Easily one of the most impressive demo’s at E3 was Killzone for the PS3. My god that video was perfect. But as it turns out what we saw was really rendered by the PS3 at 5 fps, and speed up to 30 fps, which sucks. Guerilla Games has recently fessed up to as much, but also explained themselves and given us an update on that status of Killzone PS3: “The video shown at E3 was not in real time. It was a CGI demo sped up from 5 FPS as you said. The development team did this because we could not make a demo of that calibur at 30-60 FPS on the hardware we had at the time. Now however, the team is working the game on PS3 alpha kits, and it is looking just as impressive as the demo, at 30 FPS. The game is still in the very early stages of development, and I expect that it will release with visuals that are just as impressive as those in the E3 demo. We are planning on showing in game footage before too long, and we can’t wait to see the public’s reaction to it.” Those are the words of Arjan Brussee, Development Director at Guerilla Games. And if she’s telling the truth… My God."
Oops. I misunderstood you. I thought you meant they said it was completely prerendered (IOW, not sped up, just created out of thin air). I kind of have different versions of CGI/prerendered in mind I guess. Thanks for the link though.
No problem.... I don't care how the team come up with the graphics by what ever kits, as long as the final product plays like what we saw at E3 then I be happy, otherwise it will be a disappointment considering all of the hype thats been goin on lately. I'm gonna have to take their words for this new one....
Some small updates. Here is a link to a clip of the motorcycle game that PD is making for the PS2. As expected, the graphics don't disappoint: http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/771/771980/vids_1.html Also, Sony announced an early game list for PS3 games. Check it out: http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/09/16/news_6133515.html Some interesting games there. I wonder what Tecmo plans for the PS3 that would be an "action" or "action-adventure" game. Finally, I decided to switch gears and show the PSP some love...since apparently, some developers and publishers are doing the same. Some games that were shown/announced recently include Ghosts 'N Goblins, a Mega Man game (kind of like a remake of early titles), a Street Fighter game, Katarmai Damacy, MGA2, Untold Legends 2, and, my favorite of the list, Suikoden 1+2. There were also some interesting looking games as well, such as the game I showed earlier as well as an Advance Wars-esque game. Most of these games have gameplay clips at Gamespot or IGN, so check those out if you want to catch up on the PSP media. There was also this other interesting game. I think it is about public resorts...yeah, a game about resorts. I guess it will be like a Nintendogs/Animal Crossing type game that the Japanese seem to love. Here's a link to a video of it: mms://wm2.streaming.ne.jp/namco/portable_resort_tgs.wmv Also, apparently G4 has a direct-feed of MGS4 and they are showing it on AOTS. I don't have G4 anymore, so I can't comment on it. I thought I read something about G4 getting the direct-feed version first due to some deal with Konami (I hate G4 even more now), so maybe this means we'll be getting something soon. If nothing else, you guys can watch it and I'm guessing someone will record it and post it online somewhere.
Someone else at another board just did an excellent job of summarizing the past few days. If anyone wants a good review of things that went on the past view days, just check out the following thread at another board: http://new.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=63479&page=1&pp=50 It will be edited if anything new shows up, so check back occasionally. Still no direct-feed of the MGS4 trailer. I thought if G4 had the exclusive, it would be over once they showed it; now I read they have it until Sunday. There are 2 video captures of what they showed though (not quite direct-feed. but almost there): http://www.hightymes.org/IGN/video/MGS_4.wmv http://www.hightymes.org/IGN/video/mgs.wmv 1up also has a better version of the full clip, but it is still from a camera and at a bad angle. They also put up a clip of Hideo Kojima and his crew manipulating the camera and the game to show that the trailer was in fact in real-time. Check out both clips here: http://www.1up.com/do/download?cId=3140656 That does remind me of something though. I'm curious to know what you guys think the significance of the MGS 4 trailer is in regards to the graphical capabilities of the PS3 (for MGS 4 or any PS3 game). To me, I thought the trailer showed how great games could look next-gen. It was the leap I was looking for, and I was glad to see that it was possible. Besides for extreme MS/Nintendo fanboys, I figured that any skepticism would be hard to find since Kojima clearly indicated the trailer was running in real-time on PS3 hardware, not to mention his games always meet or exceed the graphics put forth in their early trailers. Yet I checked out the digg for this at digg.com: http://www.digg.com/gaming/Metal_Gear_Solid_4:_This_is_all_real-time_baby I just couldn't believe some of the responses. I saw people saying it was still prerendered/CGI, despite it was clearly not (Kojima even poked fun at prerendered footage). I think someone even said their PS2 could do the same thing. Others were skeptical because it wasn't gameplay, even though that's never stopped the other MGS games from looking just as good (if not better) as their early trailers. I guess I just don't see how the game could look that much better in a cutscene, yet look like any other next-gen game during gameplay. I believe the demo was running at 60 FPS without any hiccups, so if nothing else, maybe Kojima could make the game 30 FPS and make it easier to accomplish (not even mentioning the difference that final hardware and 1-2 years of development could make). FWIW, I understood the skepticism of the E3 trailers, especially since none of the developers have the background Kojima has. But one thing I learned is that you should not doubt Kojima.
I think the MGS4 trailer is an important output for Sony in that it shows the power capabilities of the PS3 in such a short amount of time thats speaks out for games such as Killzone,RE5 and the FF series...just to think how those game would look like given the effort put forth and the time allowed. Despite another impressive showing by sony at the TGS, there're still doubters and critics most noticebly the MS crowd were very skeptical about the whole MGS4 trailer. I went to the Xbox forum at http://forum.teamxbox.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12 and was pretty surprise at the amount of negative critisim towards the MGS4 trailers. It was pretty funny b/c they gutted the whole content of the trailer, just trying to find any negative things they could put their eyes on. Ranging from jaggies(there were some unoffical blown up pics of MGS4 to show them), low resolution environmental textures compared to GoW and the funniest one was when some of them still believed thats its cgi/pre-rendered, even though it's a fact before the footage was shown that its indeed real time as stated by the trust worthy Hedio Kojima himself.(FPS=Forget Pre-Rendered Stuff). One biggest and maybe the most damaging criticisim of all was the fact that there wasn't any actual gameplay footage to speak of. People all over the world have already spoken ahead, saying that the game-play won't look as good as the cutscene and the animation won't be as great. Sure it was disappointing not having game-play footage but, you have to remember that the PS3 will be out almost a year ahead after the release of the X-box360. Its just too early to show anything, so i think the team just rushed on a scripted cut-scene and give the consumer an idea and feel for the game(smooth animation) which is the key and i think they succeeded. I'm not worried one bit about its gameplay. If anyone is familiar with Kojima's game and its past history knows that the gameplay always meets people's expectation and most cases exceeds them. MGS2 is a prime example of this, where the team pushes the PS2 to its limit within its first year. A game that was shown at E3 4 yrs ago which many thought was impossible to run on the difficult to program PS2 and as it turns out at the end, it was more polish then the trailer. I believe MGS4 will have the same effect on the consumer. The biggest question here is, will Sony be able to withstand a successfull 360 early launch, b/c I believe MS will close the sales gap in the new generation.
I don't put too much stock into the MGS footage. It may not be pre rendered, but it's still not gameplay. I'm not saying that the gameplay won't live up to expectations, but I'm going to view the demo with a grain of salt. Of course since MGS has more cutscenes that gameplay it could be a very accurate showing of what the game will be like.
So by that do you mean that you expect the game won't look quite as good as the trailer, or would you have the same "expectations" with or without the trailer? And is there any reason in particular that you don't put too much stock into it, other than the fact that it looks almost too good to be true? FWIW, if people are just sticking to the whole "you won't see that detail in gameplay," then in a ways, that is correct. The camera won't be zoomed in on Snake's face (with the sweat cleaning off the dirt on his face). But with good LOD techniques, I don't think you'd really be able to tell the difference. The detail could be still be possible, only you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a extremely detailed face and a good detailed face from far away. The environments and other details you can see should look great though. I just don't see how showing gameplay footage would have made that much of a difference in this case. Prerendererd clips. Yeah. Sped up clips of games running 5-10 FPS. OK, that sounds reasonable. Realtime footage at 60 FPS of a game on early hardware and in early development...um...no. I guess I just want some explanation as to why people don't want to believe it will look that impressive. I guess maybe it has to do with the leap in graphics. I'm sure if Kojima waited until later to prove it was real-time, everyone would have thought it was just another prerendered trailer without even thinking about it. I guess going from that type of detail to something possible to do in gameplay may be too much to believe. That's what a next-gen game is supposed to do. Hehe...it's almost too hard not to cut into a 70M gap in sales. As for the TXB forum reactions, I wouldn't have been surprised to see them downplay the trailer. I think I read that one of their members who acts like he knows what he is talking about (but doesn't know jack) said it was CGI so then everyone believed him. Sad place indeed. However, the digg responses surprised me since I wasn't reading comments from people that were members of a forum dedicated to the Xbox/Xbox 360. I don't know if they were an example of the responses from the general public, but if so, then I will be very disappointed. I just can't believe that the average gamer would still believe the trailer was prerendered. About the direct feed trailer...I got good news and bad news. The good news is that Konami finally put up a direct feed of the trailer on their website; the bad news is that it is a streaming version, and therefore, heavily compressed. So again, crappy video, even with a direct feed. I hate you G4. I hate you. If you still want to check it out (it does have the extra 30-60 seconds missing from the other trailers), you can go to their website for the stream or download the trailer from the following link: http://s5.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2W9O7B50R99WM2DML8UM4PCEVI I hate you G4. If we're lucky, IGN, Gamespot, 1up, or some other site might have a better quality of the direct feed clip later today (Sunday), although no promises there. All I wanted was a decent quality version of the trailer. Why do I have to wait 3-4 days after it is shown? I hate you G4.
Wait... so there are already plans for a KOF: Maximum Impact 3, when the release date for #2 hasn't even been announced yet? I'm not complaining or anything, but that's just weird. I can't remember ever seeing that happen before. Oh yeah... and Joe Higashi and Rugal better be in the game this time, or I'm going postal.
Screen shots doesn't really do the game justice, IMO (which is why I want a good quality trailer). Probably some of the better ones I saw (besides the ones already shown) were the following:
They cut Mai out of the cast? Give me a friggin break? How can you leave her out? I think they do these things just to piss me off. And I know what you mean about people not believing the detail in the MGS4 shots/videos. Take a good look at it... yeah, it looks fantastic, but take this one for example: Let's list all the things that make this seem plausible as gameplay: *I can still clearly see jagged edges on the rims of the glasses, the inside of the coat, and the blinds. *The hair looks about as immovable as videogame hair has always looked. *The facial hair looks... plastic? Can't really describe it... but it definitely don't look right. *The texture on that coat isn't close to being detailed enough to be truly mistaken for the real article. The textures on the computers and boxes in the background are closer, but still not there. Overall, yes, it looks great... but it's still a videogame. As RC said, next-gen hardware is supposed to do things that are on the edge of believeability for the current generation.
