Playing the Saints makes that pretty obvious. My thoughts on getting one would be to trade Owen Daniels. His stock is very high, he is disgruntled with his contract here. It looks like with Driessen, Hill and Casey they have invested enough to replace him. So ask yourself, would the Texans be better off with Daniels and no true #1 CB. or with a guy to pair with Dunta and covering the HB, TE with the other guys on the roster. Of course it takes two to trade and I don't know a team with CB's to spare. Maybe we could trade Travis Johnson for someone's 1st round bust CB.
I don't think any team has a #1 CB to spare plus it's a little early to panic. Once we get all our first team defense on the field it should get better. If the front line gets any type of pressure on the QB the secondary won't have to be as good.
I see why you think that but I think a more serious concern is the lack of play we are getting from our DTs in stopping the run because that is what killed us last night. Neither Okoye, DelJuan, Okam or any of the DTs seemed capable to stop the offensive linemen from pushing them out of the way allowing any of the Saints' RBs to get 5 to 9 yards every carry. Re-watching the KC game, you would notice a similar problem but the Chiefs were not as dangerous of an offensive team so this just proves one thing, while we have better DEs this season, that middle is still a problem. If our front four were straight, it would make it much easier on our secondary. Still as you said, OD is our best trading option but, I doubt we will let him go easily. And I don't think any team with good defensive talent is willing to give one of their players up for OD. Most I can think actually have quality TEs already.
I'd take a couple #2 CBs and #2 safeties over the sad sack talent we've got in this secondary. I'm seriously amazed they did nothing to address this in the offseason. Alienating Dunta for no good reason (would anyone bother franchising him next year anyway?) hasn't helped.
Why would we trade a player for a draft bust? A draft bust by definition is somebody that cannot really play despite all thoughts pre-draft to the contrary.
It's not alienating Dunta, he is the one that turned down the initial deal and has started bellyaching over being franchised tagged. Nearly everyone else who was tagged just signed and started working, he wants to miss camp so he is making a big deal over not being tagged again. If the Texans gave in to him and promise not to they will look weak in future negotiations with other players. Given all the talent the Texans will be trying to keep around in the upcoming seasons, that isn't something you want on your head. I doubt that the Texans would franchise Dunta next offseason anyway, given that it is a contract year for OD, Ryans, Walter and a few others but just giving into him is a huge mistake in the long run. Although I will be pretty pissed if Dunta comes onto the field, plays like crap and blames not being used to the system.
Didn't the same situation that Dunta is in happen a few years ago with the Patriots? I seem to remember that they caved and told the player they wouldn't franchise him the next year. They seem to be doing pretty OK.
With Dunta, he will be out of here the first second he gets. Nobody demands what he wants without bolting the first chance they get. It's not about security, it's about getting out. It doesn't help that all the guys his agent mentioned such as Haynesworth or Samuel bolted literally 1 minute after free agency started.
Just like every season since our inception, the Texans need defensive tackles that don't get pushed around
Yeah both of those players wore 31 so I guess Aaron's image showed up when I googled Buchanon. I forgot what either player looked like with a helmet on.
I would do it in a heartbeat. Our offense is loaded, and the draft showed that we are loaded at TE. A lot of guy can step up for OD. We need a guy that pick off the ball and fix our turnover ratio, which was the fourth worst in the NFL last year.
The Patriots are a Super Bowl Dynasty team headed by a guy many people think is some of a hardass genius in the form Belichick. The Texans are a young organization with no real team success except for recent non-losing seasons, they hardly compare. Heck you can look at how certain teams in the league are still having problems just signing their draft picks, if you let one agent or super star control their terms and negotiations then more of them will start trying to do the same.
Chris McAllister is still out there - I'd have to think he'd be a boost for us. Ty Law and Pat Surtain as well, but I'm not sure if they've got enough left.
Has to be a reason he is still available. More importantly, we have plenty of CB's that are probably going to merit playing-time come the first week or two of the season, and there is no roster space to add more. While we may not have a pro-bowl caliber #1, we are very deep at corner if Quin and Mccain are as good as advertised. If Bennett doesn't rebound, he may find himself at the bottom of the depth chart and/or replaceable. Dunta Robinson Jacques Reeves Fred Bennett Glover Quin Brice Mccain Antwaun Molden
Agreed. No matter how you feel about the Dunta situation, he's gonna be a HUGE factor for the defense. Reeves will eventually be back and he'll be the starter opposite of Dunta. Right now, opposing defenses are gonna absolutely eat our secondary alives since we're starting a 3rd year backup with rookies opposite of him. And let's not forget that Brees was 15 yards short of breaking Marino's all time record so it shouldn't be too much of a suprise that he torched us. I'm more concerned about our DTs and Safeties. Our DT's got absolutely dominated against a team that really isn't known for running. Okoye and Okam are not proven yet and Robinson/Johnson are servicable at best IMO. And unlike our CB situation, we have zero depth at both safety positions while also being very limited in talent to begin with.
I'll agree that the DT and especially safeties are more troubling at the moment....unfortunately, there's virtually no one out there to bring in as far as I can tell.
