does anybody on this board have a band that's actually playing a show for sxsw? is anyone attending? here's a (partial) list of bands i'm interested in checking out at this year's music festival: Drums and Tuba This Microwave World Enon Gris Gris A Frames SubArachnoid Space Panthers Death From Above 1979 Z-Trip LCD Soundsystem The Chinese Stars Diplo The Go! Team Scarface Shonen Knife Bloc Party Aesop Rock MF Doom Gorch Fock please post recommendations if you can. (MR. MEOWGI: did you go to any of the Dicks shows last week?)
Good call on Death From Above 1979. Oher bands worth checking out: Ludo The Black Maria These Arms Are Snakes Mewithoutyou Underoath By The End of Tonight
Wow, I can honestly say that I have ZERO songs from all those bands combined because I've heard of ZERO of them. They are coming up with some wierd names today... Gorch Fock, SubArachnoid Space, Gris Gris....
I like both of your lists. One to add: Ullirich Schnauss MF Doom is also doing a free show as part of the Scion promo on the 17th with Helmet and others Dakah with Rahzell (The Roots) is headlining the 3.19 Scion show. It's free to go but you have to register at http://www.scion.com/austin/ Also, you should check out the Ipod schedule download. You can put the whole SXSW schedule in the notes section of your Ipod. I've been using it for the film...it has been handy dandy. SXSW Schedule for Ipod
Jesus is Magic is showing at 9:00 tonight at the Alamo S. Lamar and again at midnight on Saturday at the Alamo Downtown. Music Passes have been sold out but you can try and buy a single ticket.
Damn, I too am unfamiliar with almost all these bands (except Shonen Knife, The Go and Drums and Tubas), but that is what SxSW is all about. Wish I still lived in Austin (though San Diego is pretty sweet), when I was there WhiskeyTown was lighting up SXSW. And as always, anything from Mr Meowgi is cool; especialy a Dicks review.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot... 'The Music was in town last Sunday and spent some time on FM94.9 spinning some favorite songs of theirs and doing an interview with the dj. They mentioned they would be in Austin for SXSW and the dj asked them if they would be catching Robert Plants show (whom will also be there), especially since so many critics have compared them to LZ. They seemed mostly humble but unimpressed with whatever Plant is up to these days (can't say as I blame them), however the DJ did amuse them (and me) when he mentioned Plant has a new albulm comming out and the bands he most liked now are Portishead and Tricky... One of them said "hey, did you hear that, Robert Plant likes Tricky"? Surprisingly, one of the only two songs I heard them play as dj's was 'Trampled Under Foot' by LZ. The other was a Marley song (3 birds?). I have only heard one song by 'The Music' but they are getting alot of buzz around here. They, Archade Fire and Mars Volta....
I didn't know Shonen Knife was still around. I have two of their albums, and enjoy them. I have never seen them live thought. I'm sure it would be a fun show.
Leaving for austin, tomorrow evening...my shows include... NY DOLLS The queers elvis C The Backyard Babies Billy Idol Guitar Wolf Black Halos The Urgencies The Ends ect... ROCKHEAD...where aer you? we have to go to the dolls show man..
Guys, make sure you catch The Dan Band on Thursday night at Emo's. You may remember they performed "Total Eclipse of the Heart" during Old School.
ill be there looking at my schedule, ive got... wed - robyn hitchcock, drums and tuba, six parts seven, the apes, MONO - if you like mogwai than these guys will rock you. i was brought to tears the first time i saw them, it was so magnificent! thursday - supagroup, robert plant (maybe), invincible czars fri - shearwater, the frames, calexico, i used to play in a band with the bassist from gorch fock and i go to lots of their shows, but i wont be seeing their set since bobby conn is at the same time. bobby conn is kind of glam-bowie/guitar shredder/cabaret/disco/metal. one of a kind and his guitarist looks like david lee roth. sat - sub oslo, cephalic carnage, pig destroyer, be very careful, harvey sid fisher, the sword (METAL) jimmy chamberlain of smashing pumpkins has a new band and they are playing, but i cant remember where or when. its called the jimmy chamberlain group so it should be easy to find.
i'm hoping - no, praying - that i can make it to the Blind Boys of Alabama/Robert Randolph and the Family Band show Friday night. i've never seen RR live (just missed him at ACL a few years ago), but i have his Live at The Wetlands album and that guy absolutely wails on the steel. i hear tickets wont go on-sale til friday, with wristbands having priority to the show....... so who wants to hook it up with a wristband??? ended up passing on the Kings of Leon show last friday. anyone go?
If I ever start another band it shall be called Ape. The first record willbe entitled A Third Arm for the Dart. That is all.
