...he doesnt seem to make too many mistakes for a rookie and a PG on a new team. I just feel comfortable with the Rockets offense when he is n the floor. If you watch him on offense, you will notice that he plays well with Harden and calls the right play. Takes the three when he is open, and drives when he needs to. Also makes decent passes off the dribble. This is in addition to shooting well from the outside, rebounding pretty well for a small PG, AND playing a harassing style defense. What a great find!!
Actually I think he commits some dumb fouls at times and makes a few mistakes on defense, but yes he's pretty good for a "rookie" (don't really consider him one since he played overseas). My favorite part about him is the energy he brings to the game. He's almost TD-like in terms of being active but without the headless chicken part.
I remember back in December/January when they had Beverly playing for Tony Douglas and he was making a boat load of mistakes while we were in a losing streak. The man is good, but his best aspects are that he is fast, quick hands and can nail jumpers when people give him space. He makes mistakes, but normally in those cases he gets pulled out when the match ups favor Lin or Harden is healthy.
I think this is only surprising until you realize he's 24 and has been a professional basketball player already. You can't underestimate how being in a professional environment helps with a player understand his role. Parsons was similar last year. He basically defended and shot jumpers. Limited role, but accepted it well. What actually surprsied me is his ability to finish at the basket. For a 6-1 PG that doesn't look super-strong like Lowry, I'm surprised he's so efficient with those floaters inside.
I dont really feel like Zboy is knee jerking. I doubt his shooting stays this hot, but his defense is very good and he makes things happen with his hustle. Props to Bev. Keep it up!
Like Bev a lot. He hustles, he defends, he can rebound, he can hit the 3. Nice change of pace guy to bring off the bench.
I think Beverly's style fits better with Harden on the floor. He gives Harden space (Lin's defender drops off), he can shoot with people running out at him, he can drive and distribute, he can defend smaller guards. Lin should be the backup.
I like his hustle but it'd be better to put him in crunch time against a tougher opponent and see how he responds.
That's what playing against those big Euro line-ups can do, where they don't call offensive 3secs in the lane. I actually want Bev to shoot more and drive more. So Harden can get some rest on the court
I think Beverly's a nice marginal PG who's played very well at certain times. His best play is to walk the ball up the court and hand it off to Harden. His 3pt shooting does make him a better partner for Harden in McHale's offense. If he was the starter, I wouldn't be crazy about it, but it wouldn't kill me either. That said, he makes stupid mistakes on defense just like Lin and Harden and TD when their guy didn't have the ball. He waves his hands around a lot though so I guess that makes him a better defender.
Don't worry OP, I don't think you are being knee jerk at all. Beverly has definitely looked good so far. No one's saying he's the next Gary Payton or even the next Terry Porter -- but he has definitely been the best back up point guard this team has had so far this year. I think the guy has some strong potential in the NBA, but I'm not betting the house on him to be all NBA or anything -- I just really like the way he plays, the effort he gives, and appreciate him being instrumental in this a several other wins this season.
