A generational victory. Can anybody imagine that DOMA was enacted with such strong support only two decades ago?

It's incredible how public support has grown for something that was considered so controversial relatively recently. Any member of the GSD community deserves the same rights and remedies under the law as the rest of heterosexuals. This reversal of public opinion gives me hope for several other issues.

30 states? I'm pretty shocked by that number.

Good for them, there was never a strong legal reason why gay people shouldn't be able to get married in the first place.

    The Power of Hollywood.
The drive to 'normalize' homosexuality has worked
Not saying there is anything wrong with that
    but
One cannot underestimate the power of TV, Radio and Movies
    to sway public opinion.

I am for allowing gays to get married. One of the arguments I read was about taxes. Certain states allow un married couples to file jointly so this opens the door to same sex buddies pretending to be homosexuals and file jointly to save taxes.

This also opens the door for more abuse of the system with regards to marrying somebody for legal immigration status. Before, if you were illegal, your pool of probable partners would be 50% less.

IMO it's all about equal protection though. Freedom/Liberty and abuse of the system go hand in hand, it's why often those who support a strong government support taking away civil liberties to do so be it "right wing" big government people or "left wing" big government people.

As far as the government is concerned, marriage is just a contract and there's no defensible reason why 2 adults shouldn't be able to engage in that type of contract.

I am in agreement with you but mentioned legality and I provided some loopholes that can and will be abused.

All those people are going to die!?!?!?!??

I think you'd have to be a pretty hardcore anti-tax tea-party type to actually go through the trouble of filing jointly with a friend for a little tax break.

Your objections fall into the same category as the voter fraud boogeyman that state legislatures are crying about. Go prove this stuff happens (or will happen) in order to justify restricting the rights and privileges of everyone else.

Well voter fraud absolutely does happen, and there would be cases of people pretending to be gay couples to get tax shelters, however the important question is if those loopholes are worth restricting the rights and liberty of citizens.

Not sure if this has to be argued. I agree that it is more important to give them liberty. I am not justifying why it should be banned but sharing some of the legal arguments being thrown at it.

Fair enough. I still think those are ridiculous arguments.
