Well, XXX was the last big Summer release. Now, the movie studios will be dumping all of their second rate summer reject films on us until the big "oscar contenders" start being released in November or December. I actually didn't make it out to the movies much this Summer. Beginning on May 3 (opening weekend of Spiderman), I only saw seven movies this Summer, probably because I got married in April: Spiderman: C- (I just didn't see what everyone else saw) Attack of the Clones: A- (the weakest one so far, but I can't give a Star Wars movie anything less than an A) Minority Report: A (excellent story combined with stunning visuals) Mr. Deeds: D (probably the most UN-funny movie ever. Hopefully the Adam Sandler cartoon will make up for this groaner, but I'm not too optimistic) Lilo and Stitch: B (Was dragged to this by the Old Lady, but I liked it. It wasn't "cutesy" like most Disney flicks) Insomnia: B+ (very solid performance by Robin Williams) Signs: A- (very creepy: Better than Unbreakable, but still not as good as Sixth Sense) Summer movies I either didn't get a chance or didn't care to see: Scooby Doo MIB II Road to Perdition (want to see) Stuart Little 2 K19 Austin Powers (may catch it in the dollar theater...didn't terribly enjoy the first two) Sum of All Fears Bourne Identity XXX (will probably see) Overall, I'd rate the Summer movie season, or what little I caught of it, as "pretty good" How would everyone else rate the overall Summer movie season?
EditLease don't read this. Please. So, LOTR 2 is just a second rate reject? I get your point though. Aren't there other good movies coming out too, though? Edit: I TOLD YOU NOT TO READ IT!
no no no... Late August/early September is typically the time when studios dump all of the movies they wanted to release during the Summer, but didn't want to risk the financial loss due to the intense Summer competition... LOTR II is scheduled to be released in November, I believe. I didn't see the first one because I really wasn't into Tolkein when I was a kid, but I got a voucher to see it for free because Hollywood Video didn't have it in stock. If I like the first one, I'll probably check out the second one in theaters... The only other movies for the rest of the year that look good right now are Formula 51 (Samuel L. Jackson, my favorite actor), Sweet Home Alabama, and Red Dragon...
OOPS! READ TOO FAST! I thought you said there wouldn't be any good movies till next summer. MY bad! Yeah, this time is bad. Like that Pluto movie fixing to come out. Edit- I may be wrong, but I think LOTR 2 will be out in December. I think.
Spiderman: A- Toby Maguire vs. the Green Goblin kicked ass. Cool story and plot devt. Could've done better than Kirsten Dunst though. Bourne Identity: A Kept up the whole time. Matt Damon finally in a cool action flick. The German chick was cute too. Minority Report: B+ Thought the idea of what our world looks like in 50 years was pretty cool. Maybe I would've liked it better if I wasn't so tired. Mr. Deeds: F Can't believe I paid good money to see this POS. Waterboy was tons better than this. Not even close to Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore. Very unfunny movie and a huge disappointment. Insomnia: C+ Very predictable. Dry. I waited 2 hours for that stupid ending. Star Wars - Episode II: B Only reason this movie gets a B is because of Yoda kicking Count Dukuu's ass at the end. Dialogue was HORRIBLE. Jedi Master Windu: "This party's over." Dumbest line ever. Could've done without seeing Anakin and Padme rolling in the meadows. Lucas came up way short again. Signs: A- Saw it Sunday night, and I really liked it. Very suspenseful, and I liked the fact that there were actual aliens, unlike Contact. Shyamalan's camera work and cinematography were as good as advertised, and was really creepy at times. Haven't seen Austin Powers III, XXX, or MIB II. I'll probably rent em when they come out on DVD. Also, did ya'll see the fall previews? Lord of the Rings II in December and Harry Potter II in November. Also, the new Bond movie in November.
I thought the summer was pretty solid. Some entertaining stuff. My grades... Austin Powers in Goldmember: B- Blood Work: B- The Bourne Identity: B+ Insomnia: B K-19: The Widowmaker: D+ Men in Black II: C+ Minority Report: A- Mr. Deeds: D- Reign of Fire: D Road to Perdition: B+ Signs: B Spider-Man: A- Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: C The Sum of All Fears: B Undercover Brother: B+ Windtalkers: D+ (verrrry disappointing) xXx: C-
Spiderman-C + Undercover Brother - B + Attack of The Clones-B - Mr Deeds-C Bourne Identity-A Signs-A Damn, have I only seen six movies this summer? I'll probably end up seeing Triple X and Austin Powers in addition to these five movies... I saw Spiderman twice, which is weird considering its the only movie i've seen twice and I didnt really like it that much either time...The power of being with a group of friends that wanna see it, I guess... I wanted to see Minority Report as well, but never got around to it. MR is probably the biggest Box Office disappointment of the summer, even though it made a profit. I'm really suprised that Undercover Brother wasn't the suprise hit of the summer. I thought it was smart, funny, and had somewhat of a message about race issues without cramming it down your face or taking itself too serious...It wasn't a flop, but it should have made more money... Bourne Identity is the best movie I've seen in the theater in a long while, a lot better as a whole than Signs, even though I gave them the same rating. Signs was awesome because it kept me and my date (and everyone else in the theater) on the edge of our seats. Awesome movie that could scare the crap out of you with out showing any blood or gore. AOTC was fun to look at because of the great graphics and YODA, but besides that, there wasnt much substance<sp> in this LONG movie. Mr. Deeds was alright, I got a few chuckles out of the "sneaky" butler...I didn't hate it as much as everyone else, but it was decent...
My grades... Attack of the Clones: C+ (Not as bad as Episode 1 but they are killing the franchise.) Lilo & Stitch: A+ (best Disney film since Lion King) Men In Black II: A- (great film...good storyline...awesome action on the Giant Screen at Edward's) Signs: A (it kept my attention even though I don't usually care for this type of film) Spider-Man: A (spectactularly done) Austin Powers: B+ (not just a retred of the others...very funny to boot) Undercover Brother: B (very funny in parts) Road to Perdition: C (they could have cared less about the plot or characters...they just tried to fit the Oscar formula.)
A little pretentious? My preferences (I have a bias towards Sci Fi) Elite Minority Report Attack of the Clones Good Spider-Man Bourne Identity Better than expected Reign of Fire Average Insomnia Bomb MIB II Austin Powers III
Amen! My Top 3 (okay, four): 1. About a Boy 2. Spider-Man 3. SW: Attack of the Clones / Minority Report
Hey A-Train, I did the SAME EXACT thread last year!!! I was going to do it again on Labor Day but beat me to it. Well, i going to break it down in the same synopsis I did last year. Best Movies Star Wars Ep. 2 (all about Yoda) Spiderman New Guy (All about ELIZA DUSHKU) Undercover Brother Signs Bad Company (great movie, was wayyy overlooked) Mr Deeds Halloween Resurrection (it was actually alright) Worst Movies There wasnt one movie that I absolutley hated Mixed xXx MIB 2 Austin Powers 3 Goldmember Minority Report Eight Legged Freaks Road to Perdition (too long, slow paced) Like Mike (some bball to watch while the season was over) Wanted to See Lilo and Stich Bourne Identity About a Boy Scooby Doo Insomnia Sum of All Fears Enough Didnt Bother Spirit K19 Windtalkers Reign of Fire Crocodile Hunter Blood Work Still lookin forward to Blue Crush (chicks in bikins, that sold me) S1m0ne Undisputed City by the Sea
I saw a few movies: Bourne Identity: A+ (fantastic plot) Mr. Deeds: C+ (funny story... i went to the theater while visiting the folks in Houston a month ago... we were planning to see "The Sum of All Fears"... well someone in my family misread the showtimes in the newspaper, and the movie wasn't playing when we got there. the only thing showing was "Mr. Deeds." I told my parents they would hate it, it would be a waste of money, and we should return home. But they were really in the mood to see a movie, so they took the chance. They actually ended up liking it! I was shocked, for they are pretty much the drama movie type.) Spiderman: D+ (i don't know what everyone saw in this, i thought it was awful) Austin Powers 3: C+ (again, pretty bad... the only thing I liked was the opening sequence... one of the funniest 15 minutes ever!) The Sum of All Fears: B+ Signs: A-
My favorites this summer (a good movie season). I saw 10 movies. 1. Signs 2. The Bourne Identity 3. Spiderman 4. Episode II - AOTC 5. Road to Perdition 6. Austin Powers - Goldmember 7. Minority Report 8. The Sum of All Fears 9. Mr. Deeds Could have done without: MIB2 I wouldn't mind seeing Blood Work and Martin Lawrence's Runteldat. I don't have a lot of hope for Eddie Murphy's Pluto Nash movie. Looking forward to Red Dragon, LOTR2, Friday After Next, Punch-Drunk Love, Analyze That and 8 Mile. Also Star Trek Nemesis is a maybe.
I've seen around 35 movies so far this year, but I think these are the only big summer blockbusters I saw. 1. Minority Report (A) 2. Signs (A) 3. Road to Perdition (A-) 4. Bloodwork (B+) 5. Star Wars (B+) 6. Spiderman (B) 7. Insomnia (B) 8. Bourne Identity (C+) 9. Sum of All Fears (C) 10. Austin Powers 3 (C) 11. MIB II (C) 12. K-19 (C-) 13. Windtalkers (C-) 14. XXX (D+) 15. Scooby Doo (F) I saw four "smaller movies" over the summer that were pretty good. 1. Sunshine State (A) 2. Enigma (B+) 3. Lovely and Amazing (B+) 4. 13 Conversations About One Thing (B) I'm pretty much just waiting for Gangs of New York to come out now.
Well, a friend and i just went and saw XXX--it was about what I expected: a few cool explosions, tons of awesome cars, and neat stunts. I'll give it a B. I wouldnt really advise anyone over 25 to go see this movie or someone that forgets to turn their mind off before they enter the theater every time they go. (e.g. the same type of people that go to see a movie where apes talk and take over a planet and then complain about an unrealistic ending)
