(I can hear the jokes already... ) Seriously---what does this mean? I see confederate flags on eighteen wheelers on the highways around chicago all the time...and bumperstickers that contain some variance of the idea in the subject line. What and How are these people expecting this to happen?
I believe it's going to start with southerners deciding not to wash their hands so that they will scare away you wussie northerners...
it might have something to do with all the recent changes to southern states with rebel flags on a state flag? Maybe? it's the only thing I can think of?!
it's silly!!!! the South has already "risen" again...just without slavery and all the crappy trappings of the Confederacy!
Just a ridiculous slogan propagated by a bunch of morons who can't get over the fact that the Confeds got their butts handed to 'em by Sherman & the boys.
The South - what is the South? Does it now include Arizona, New Mexico and SoCal? Because if that's the case, wouldn't they be rising for the first time? In all seriousness, I've never understood the glorification of a culture in which its people believed that the wealth of a few large cotton farmers trumped the unity of a nation, the freedom of a race and the lives of its own men.
I really have a problem with your crude statement. I am not a 100% sure why, but I just don't like it. I was thinking a lot about the Civil War the other day and how sad it was. (I think I was watching Glory) All of those men died fighting their "brothers". I think that most of the men in the South couldn't care less about slavery, they just didn't want someone telling them what to do. Most of the slave owners were rich plantation owners, not the common man that fought and died in the war. So, before you pop off some other thoughtless statement, think about what you would do if you were in their position??? GB - depending upon who you ask in "The South" it could mean a lot of different things. I think it means that the Southern culture will rise again ( courtesy, respect, and hospitality). I really don't have a problem with the Rebel flag, it is part of our history and tradition. It does not mean that we want to have slaves again. Unfortunately most of the time you see the rebel flag, it is a racist person that doesn't represent us all.
OK...so was the fight about breaking from the Union to have their own government...or was it about the right of self destiny? I can dig that...but how do you (as a group) feel about slavery being in your past? Just an unfortunate "oops"? I guess it is stereotype, but the common characterization of a southern 'good ol boy' is that he likes his place in society (majority) and cares not what has to happen to keep it. I don't remember what it was I was watching, but it was post civil war and a southern belle was screaming at her servent "Abraham Lincoln can sign all the papers he wants, it don't change a ***** thing down here" And in Mississippi Burning last month, the KKK, "Them northerners don't run nothing down here and if they try they'll learn real fast or die in the process"
It was a fight about states rights. Slavery was an issue to be sure, but it was NOT the primary issue. In fact the only reason that Lincoln freed the slaves was to stop England, France and Spain from joining the fight AGAINST the north. The south wanted the states to have the power to govern themselves. DaDakota
Provincialism versus Nationalism. The South did suprisingly well. The North had a substantial advantage in industrial capacity, and the size of its army. The South probably would have won if Stonewall Jackson hadn't have been shot by his own men. Oh well.
Yeah, it was about states' rights. States' rights to own slaves! Slavery is *the* issue in the United States throughout the antebellum period. The Missouri Compromise, the Dred Scott case, the 3/5ths compromise... I mean, you don't have to be a historian to notice this stuff. The very first episode of that Ken Burns' Civil War documentary makes that clear. Even the South's leaders admitted as much when they seceded. That doesn't make the whole war any less tragic (it's absolutely heartwrenching), but saying slavery wasn't the primary issue is - look, I don't have a more polite way of saying this - it's *deluded*. Nomar, the South fought pretty amazingly (and they were helped by the initial idiocy of the Northern generals) but their loss was inevitable. They couldn't maintain the manpower and they had no industry. They were screwed whether Jackson died or not.
DaDakota, you're missing the boat on this one man. The civil war was about more than slavery, you're right about this, but you understate how much it WAS about slavery. Now just to get some things straight that kinda bug me. First of all, slavery is in EVERYONE'S past in this country, not just us "good ol boys" here in the south. It ticks me off to no end to hear people from the north say things like that as if no one north of the Mason-Dixon line ever owned a slave. And that stereotype you're talking about is just that, a stereo-type. Dude, what the hell is wrong with you? Is the slogan bull****, hell yes. Are you a disrespectful *******, hell yes. A lot of people on both sides of this horrible war were killed, some families lost every adult male. Then you make light of it with a comment like this? Go read some freakin history and get some class you moron!
