UT's class out of the top ten. Mack has said you can afford two subpar classes, so, this is one. Looks like he's no longer Mr. February and the grumblings of "mediocre coaching" may start to bite Mack in the butt. He needs to beat OU and win the conference. That will turn the tide. All that being said, a top 15 class isn't bad, but OU and ATM did better this year.
gr8-1, where did you get your rankings from, rivals100? not that most of it matters anyway, but on espn tom lemming has UT at 8 and atm at 11. blowu is in at 6.
Recruiting rankings are often based on # of recruits instead of quality of recruits. I think the Horns picked up 11 4stars this year. Not too bad. This year's in-state crop wasn't nearly as rich as in years past. Louisiana was pretty close to Texas in terms of high school talent this year. Nonetheless, we came away with future starters at CB and TE in Tarrell Brown and Tony Hills Jr. We also added some nice athletes in Michael Griffin and Billy Pittman.
http://maxemfingerrecruiting.theinsiders.com/2/91041.html A&M ranked 3 while Texas is tied for 11 with FSU and Mississippi State.
Texas is already so loaded that it probaly scared away some of the kids who dream of starting for four years. But they filled most of their needs so I'm still happy with it. Missing a couple of 4 star second stringers isn't going to hurt them.
If they have the studs they claim from the previous recruiting years do the really need a top 10 finish?
I think this year, Mack at least didn't "reach" for early commits i.e., a couple of guys who, in hindsight maybe shouldnt' have been offered. He said they were more selective and could have inked a couple of more but will save them for next year. this year's class was about speed and athleticism. If we go by rivals scale, their avg rating was 3.7, which is pretty good. Sky is not falling. Now, coach somebody.
USC and Florida had pretty stunning classes, LSU had a very strong one as well. What puzzled me was that UT didn't go after more DE's aka alonzo dotson, that guy from Jersey, etc. Jarviss Moss man that was the killer, he was the ONE guy I thought was a must. Ah well, can't win every year. We had an excellent DB class probably the best overall in the nation, probably the best TE class, and added some depth at WR, OL, and DE. Crowder should be pretty good. USC though man they CLEANED UP. They got 2 badass WRs, a very good TE, numerous talented DL and OL, a very good LB, just player after player. Then Florida what can you say? They got the OTHER two stud WRs Jackson and Caldwell, and managed to land Moss, Cohen, and Webb. I can't understand how they did so well after such an off year. I guess Zook is an awesome recruiter, ditto for Caroll. UT will be fine, next year they should rebound from a mildly disapointing class.
Wow, that's pretty high. I don't think that's reflective of many of the rankings though. One I saw had A&M at 11 and Texas at 18. Nonetheless, what the Aggies did was pretty impressive considering they switched coaches midstream. ...still waiting for haven to comment about the Texas "Top 3 Recruiting Class" that he guaranteed.
Rivals has Texas at 11, Refman, and a lot of those rankings are based on sheer numbers of recruits, we only had 18 signees, compared to schools who needed and inked 25. Most do it by a point scale. You guys did well in recruiting and all, but don't think Texas didnt bring in another outstanding class. It's just a lot of kids, like Leak who had us on his list, realized we had other studs like VY waiting in line at his position. Dotson the only explanation is UT-OU the last 3 years, and Moss had a lifelong dream to play in the state of florida. I'm not ragging on the aggies, because they did well in recruiting, I'm just pointing out that most top recruiting sites have UT at the bottom half of top ten to around 11-12 ish. I'm actually glad the way Mack did it this year.
