IMO, family guy is a simpsons rip off. similar characters, similar character traits. it will never be as smart as the simpsons humor either. however, the simpsons has become old (though it took a record 18 or 19 years) and family guy is in its prime and may be funnier right now. as a series this shouldn't even be a discussion, the simpsons had a hall of fame career. let's put it this way. shaq is a HOF player who is putting up the worst #'s of his career right now, and will continue to decline until he's retired. chris kaman has been around half as long, but putting up twice the numbers. hes better RIGHT NOW, but overall it's an insult to shaq to even compare the two. when they are both retired, only one will be remembered. what i don't understand is that there are a lot of people who only look at the present and use that to decide which is the better series. although i have heard numerous arguments why family guy is funnier and a better show, i've never heard a decent argument why so many people think it's a better overall series than the simpsons.
anyone who would even debate the issue has to be under 20...because there really is no comparison. the simpsons have become the rolling stones of sitcoms.
Well, I for one never really watched the Simpsons at 5:00 like everyone else. At times I did st through a couple of showings and I will admit a few were pretty funny. But based on what I have seen from Family Guy, is it fare to say FG is a little more mature as far as the satire goes? I know TSimps was somewhat the origin of Cartoon Satire, but I fell FG is the perfection of the Simpsons in a sense. Now your Shaq comparison, of course Shaq will be a HOF(Unfortunately), you cant really compare the 2 based on career stats. And Kaman is doing pretty good right now but to compare Kaman with Shaq as an analogy to Simpsons and FG. NO SIR!!!! Way off... Shaq is Not the Simpsons - he is not a fundamentals player, he was a big kid stuck in a beast costume. Can't shoot, no education, and with no education comes no morals... Now add money to those 3 and you have a cocky center who thinks he is still good at 36... Sad, Sad, Sad No need to explain why Kaman is not Family Guy (Self-explanatory) Anyway after watching a couple of youtube clips... I would say Family Guy wins the vote for funniest, but we also have to think about the contemporary news as opposed to what the Simpsons had to work with. Just because one is a HOF doesn't mean the other cant beat it. Its like Kobe and MJ... Everyone is so stuck on MJ that they cant even consider Kobe... I have no say in who is better I have my opinion, but would rather not share
To say one's a copy of the other is just plain wrong. They may similar elements, but they're a lot more different than most people realize. "The Simpsons" is primarily a satire with a few random "what the..." moments thrown in. "Family Guy" is a show built almost exclusively on random "what the..." moments and subtle pop culture references with elements of satire thrown in.
I am so sick of people saying the simpsons is so clever. It isnt. I have never found the simpsons very funny, its more just about plot imo. Family guy may have stupid jokes but I laugh, but they have clever jokes too. And the family may be similar, but the simpsons has even ripped plots off from fgamily guy, so it goes both ways imo Family Guy South Park King of the Hill are all better tha the simpsons

both cartoons are funny but lately the simpsons have declined but they have been on the air for nearly 2 decades!! that alone is just amazing. if i was given a choice of having either the simpsons during its "prime" its third through 9th seasons or family guy in its prime (1st through current day) it would be simpsons hands down. the two things that annoy me with family guy are: gags that they drag on for entirely way too long too a point where its just not funny anymore...this happens a lot and gets annoying...like that chicken fight that lasted nearly like 5 minutes totally unnecessary it makes me think that they just dont have material so they just do this to fill the time pop-cultural references/and the "like the time when...." that are done over and over...its good up to a point when like most of the episode ends up being like that is just dumb. dont get me wrong i love family guy too i have all the dvds (volumes and "movies") but when the simpsons were still running strong there wasn't anything bad I could think of to say about the show.
I made it clear... At 5:00 as in I never turned my t.v. on and literally waited for the show to come up. I am not a hardcore fan of the Simpsons nor Family Guy. I have an opinion as an outsider. Shed some light on biased answers from my point of view. Of course I may sound biased but not intended. Plus Shaq and Kaman were mentioned had to speak on that.
if you cant find the simpsons clever and in the same post can say that family guy is, i'm going to have to question your intelligence because that is one of the most asinine comments i've ever read.
it's a show created by seth green (chris on family guy). it's alluded to in the family guy star wars episode (which was frickin awful). robot chicken is a 15 minute show which has a bunch of 30 sec to a couple minute long viginettes using stop animation with old toys (he-man, star wars, baby dolls, etc.)... it is similar to family guy in that it has no plot and a bunch of quick gags for really ADD people
