Why would SI put the Rockets on the cover...We suck! I remember my favorite incidence of the SI Jinx...January, 1997, one week before the NFL conference championship games. Jacksonville and Carolina are both 2nd year expansion teams trying to get to the Superbowl...Who's on the cover? Yep, Mark Brunell and Kerry Collins...I saw that and thought, "Green Bay vs. New England in the Superbowl...write it down..."
Hey, there is no cover jinx for us since SI basically ignores the Rockets. In 1994, an NBA championship couldn't even help the Rockets grace the cover of the magazine (on a national scale).
Actually, Olajuwon was on the cover twice during the first championship season playoffs. I have both copies.
Does anyone else not find it wierd that SI is putting out an issue basically saying how all their predictions suck? It's one thing to get injured right after being on the cover, but most of the SI Jinx comes from the fact that their sportswriters are horrible predictors. Now, to sell more, they are openly admitting that. Wierd.
Jeff, I was specifically referring to the 1994 NBA championship cover that was only regional, not national. And yes, I'm still very bitter over it.
They did release a Rockets championship cover (I have that one too) but it wasn't the general SI that came out on newsstands. In fact, I subscribed to SI that year and I had to request a copy of the special Rockets championship issue. They provided them free to subscribers and it came in a big manilla envelope I think I still have.
