What's the point in beating the Spurs when we'd get destroyed by the Lakers?

    DoD,

True.....they don't cast rings for being State of Texas Champions. The whole point of this is a solid shot at a ring.

Only if LA can out-score Houston. If a better-than-average, albeit psychologically weak, SA defense cannot stop LA, maybe teams should try to out-score LA.

Interesting. With the new rules permitting zone defenses, Houston should concentrate on finding (motivated) shot-blockers and capable scorers. The shot-blockers, Houston can find in the draft. Proven scorers, they'll probably have to go north of the border or closer to Gotham.

    Blue,

The big variable next year, as you said, will be the the legalization of zone-type defenses. I have no idea what kind of effect that will have on the Lakers or other teams. Based upon the way the Lakers are playing now, however, there's no way any team can outgun them this year. The Kings were a team that could run and gun with the best of them and they sputtered against them. Heck, even the Mavs' running game was stopped by San Antonio. I'm of the opinion that good defense is what wins games for you in the playoffs. The Lakers are so freaking dominant, it's scary.

I watched the Mavs play the Lakers when the Lakers were beginning to peak late in the season. Even with the array of offensive weapons on the Mavs, they were utterly destroyed by the Lakers.

Interestingly enough, your theory may be put to the test if Milwaukee makes it to the Finals against the Lakers. They have enough offensive weapons to test your theory. My bet is they'll get destroyed just like every other team the Lakers have faced.

I'd like to see Milwaukee match up against LA because (1) I'd like to see how a "winner" [read: Sam Cassell] plays against Hell-A, (2) how Karl will defend against O'Neil and Bryant (if anyone knows about defending dominant Cs, Karl does), and (3) we'll finally get a chance to see Allen prove himself -- but I suspect when it's all said and done, Allan Houston will prove to be the better SG.
