I love this quote... "FDR believed the federal government should spend your dimes. Ronald Reagan believed the people should spend their own dimes." FDR became President because after the economic failures of the two previous Republican administrations, most folks didn't have two dimes to rub against each other. And the reference to the "Freedom President?" Please. I suppose in the grand scheme of things, following policies set up by your Repub and Dem predecessors is more important and led to more freedom than defeating facism in a world war. Reagan was OK, but not dime worthy, especially at the expense of FDR.

    ON CAPITOL HILL
Congressmen want Reagan's face on dime
Introduce bill to replace FDR, honor ' the Freedom President'

A move is afoot on Capitol Hill to replace President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's image on the dime with Ronald Reagan's.

A group of 80 members of Congress have co-sponsored a bill to put The Gipper's face on the coin.

Rep. Mark Souder, R-Ind., introduced the bill.

"It is particularly fitting to honor the Freedom President on this particular piece of coinage because, as has been pointed out, President Reagan was wounded under the left arm by a bullet that had ricocheted and flattened to the size of a dime," Souder wrote to colleagues in the House of Representatives.

"FDR believed the federal government should spend your dimes. Ronald Reagan believed the people should spend their own dimes. I think it's clear that the dimes in your pocket should bear Ronald Reagan's image," co-sponsor Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif., said, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Delano Roosevelt, grandson of the former president, wasn't impressed with the proposal.

"I could care less about who's on the dime," the former Long Beach, Calif., city councilman told the paper. "But it's all about how they are going about it. ... And I think it's embarrassing that (the congressmen) have nothing else better to do than to do some sort of grandstanding thing just to get them on 'This Week In Review."'

According to the report, Souder spokesman Martin Green said this bill was fueled by Republican outrage in the wake of the CBS miniseries "The Reagans," which the network eventually canceled. The program aired on the Showtime cable network on Sunday.

Souder says he is willing to compromise with Democrats who might not want to dump FDR completely from the coin. An arrangement could be set up to rotate the two presidents' images on the dime.

The Daily News says it could cost between $30,000 and $80,000 to redesign the dime with Reagan's image.

Changing a coin does not take an act of Congress; the U.S. Mint can make that decision independently. The bill is meant simply to show support for the change.

This is silly. FDR was too good to not be on a coin. Maybe something like....

    Penny: Lincoln
    Nickel: Jefferson
Dime: Teddy Roosevelt, JFK, or Reagan (rotate those?)
    Quarter: FDR
    Dollar (coin): Washington

Off-topic, but I always like the FDR stamp joke that P.J. O'Rourke once told (though I'm sure he didn't originate it). Something along the lines of "My grandmother is having trouble with the FDR stamps. She keeps spitting on the wrong side."

You would think that Reagan should be content with an airport named after him ...

Reagan was right about almost everything- free markets, communism, taxes, the size of government, the military, etc.

If that's the criteria, why isn't there a movement for the Phil Gramm nickel or the Ed Meese penny?

I don't care how much in love with Reagan somebody is, there is no excuse for the disrespect people are showing for FDR. We should be so lucky if we ever have a President like FDR again.

They ought to make an Ed Meese coin, but it should be one that only works in p*rn theaters.

Actually I just realized that he would be replacing FDR. I don't support that. FDR was one of the greats.

Maybe we can make a 15 cent coin for Reagan.

Before his fifteen minutes are up, can somebody just hurry the f-k up already and get Congress to mint us a new "50-cent" piece?

How badass would that be? Can we just do it already?

He's declining in popularity w/the rise of Outkast, and I don't see the "Andre 3000" dollar bill as a possibility.....

Reagan tried to veto sanctions against South Africa. Luckily Congress was smart enough to stop him.

Reagan would have had apartheid in still if he could. It's ridiculous that someone like that would be on a coin.

Roosevelt tried to pack the Supreme Court.

I don't think anyone who's served as President is pure as the driven snow.

Not that I necessarily think Reagan needs to be on the dime. I think we're doing enough screwing around with the money for now, as it is.
