At a party I went to over the weekend I had overheard someone refer to his friend as the "Token Black Guy." After such, another fellow came up and said "He, sir, is an African-American." After this guy said that the other guy goes "Actually he is from descended from very dark Cubans" which caused the other individual to go on a racial tirade using every race card he had in his wallet. This is 2009...is the race card applicable anymore in most situations?
sounds like the joke completely went over someones head. slightly OT but what is wrong with using the term black, if it is not in a derogatory meaning? i mean why is the politically correct term african american... what do they call black people in other countries?
This is getting so very confusing. I seriously don't know what to call people anymore without somehow feeling I've insulted them...and that just stinks. I'm half Japanese so let me make this perfectly clear. You can call me: while in NY: Puerto Rican in Miami: Cuban LA: Pacific Islander Grand Rapids: Italian Memphis: Native American Texas: Mexican and Oklahoma: DEAD (come on, laugh...that was a great joke twenty years ago)
I've always been intrigued by this "pacific islander". What is that? Which island? What part of the pacific? Very interesting.
Reminds me of an episode from the glorious hispanic sitcom "que pasa U.S.A?", in which a young manolo(from scarface) gets into a fight with an african american kid. The african american kid calls out manolo for being a racist, only to realize that manolo's best friend is darker than he is. African american kid says to manolo, " why do you like him? he is blacker" Manolo replies, " He is cuban." Dammit, I can't remember steven bauer's name in that show.
At least get it right. According to anthropology, there are only four races: Mongoloid (from Asia) Caucasoid (from Europe) Abariginoid (from Australia) Negroid (from Africa)
(grinning) Honestly? I have no idea where that came from. I remember applying for something and was asked my nationality and "pacific islander" seemed to be my best option. I wasn't, nor looked Japanese, didn't feel, nor looked "American" and since islands are all I knew, I wore the Pacific Islander badge ever since. My best...lazy...asinine guess would be anyone from an island in the Pacific. Sorry, not much help was I. Maybe I'm more of a Pacific Rim kinda guy with one stay in Hawaii...who knows. thanks bigtexxx, now I'm just confused and lost.....
What? I'm a MongoCaucas-oid! (At least I'm not confused anymore, although I like Pacific Islander better.)
I just call black people "black". It seems like a lot of people are afraid that term is potentially un-pc and offensive, so they shy away from using it in favor of a more pc term because they don't want to be accused of being racist. But calling black people "African American" doesn't make any sense to me because it makes too many assumptions. I have a black friend who is French, but currently living in the U.S. He laughs at the term "African American", as if all black people identify themselves most with African culture and are American.
So, people from Hawaii and Okinawa are not Pacific Islanders, but Hawaiians and Okinawans/Japanese? Just asking now that bigtexxx's question has caught my curiosity. Thanks.
I still don't see how "ANYTHING-American" applies. You are born in some country, you are THAT nationality. Don't add "American" to anything about race. Race != Nationality. Eff it... colors? Yeah, you're either BLACK, BROWN, YELLOW, or WHITE. Race? Yeah, you're either Hispanic (Mexican, Salvadoran, Colombian, Puerto Rican, etc.), Caucasian (descending from blue-eyed, blonde peeps in Europe), African (any peeps in Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, United States, Canada, etc., descending from African ancestors traveling either as slaves or free peeps - this includes India), or Asian (eyes are the easiest way to figure it out). I know most of you won't agree. There are some in betweens, but mix and match and you get everything else. I am MEXICAN, but I guess you can technically and now by rule make the same argument that Native Indians from the Mexico region mixed with European peeps. FAIL. Off to the D&D with this race stuff.
not if the person being described descends from Mexico... but most Hondurans, Salvadorans, and Guatemalans in the US get painted in this broad stereotypical description of anyone from Central America as "Mexicans" if someone proudly claims their Mexican Heritage, how in any way could this be construed as racist?
"Mexicans" are people from MEXICO. Why would that be considered racist, Michael Scott? Now, if you run around town calling anyone you think is Mexican "Hey, Mexican" without knowing if in fact they are from Mexico, why you'll be an ignorant ahole.
Ya know, if I went to Mexico, and people there confused me with Canadians... ... I really wouldn't give a damn. People are too effin' sensitive.
