Not really. They are simply not allowing discrimination, which is not protected under free speech. Discrimination is already against the law.

Correct. Lousy typing on my part.
I’ve been critical of “safe spaces” and do think
That college should be a place where people are exposed to speech and points of view that they find uncomfortable. I was very critical of when ANTIFA at my Alma Mater CAL tried to burn down the Student Union to keep Milo Yannipoulis from speaking.

I fully understand that speech isn’t without consequences and why Jewish students would feel threatened by a lot of the speech out there. The response to that should be more speech. This thread illustrates exactly the problem with picking what speech should be protected and what banned.

In this case if the University Presidents either had a blanket policy giving safe spaces for LGBT and other students form speech they found hateful and Jewish students from antisemitic speech or a policy that allowed all speech as long as it didn’t go into direct threats at individuals it would’ve been better.

I would have to see this in practice but it does make me uneasy. It’s one thing for private institutions to have policies that limit speech it’s another for the government to do so.

Such a dark and embarrassing time for these Universities, fundamental change needs to happen beyond college Presidents stepping down - that's a good first step, but definitely more needs to be done

The whole college shouldn't be a "safe space", but part of it is perfectly fine to me. You have the right to speak, not the right to be heard. I should note that many states, as part of the right-wing push on allowing unabridged hate speech, banned "safe spaces" on college campuses in 2018-2019. What Jews face on some of these campuses is the result of some of these laws. (This is yet another example of right-wing politicians pushing for legislative changes that they now use to create outrage.)

"The response to that should be more speech" makes complete sense to me in the past. I don't know if that is a practical reality anymore in today's social media environment. Individuals no longer have a "single" physical voice to spread but a megaphone that can be virtually spread at "viral" speed and scope. This is why we should NOT assume it is still applicable today. It's a great ideal, but the underlying assumption might be wrong (or might still be right). We should look at the actual practical impact over many years of social media (and AI coming up fast) to see if it still stands. So far, I think the "more speech" is losing. However, we'll see.

more speech is a fine idea in concept, and the jew-hate would be defensible on those grounds if the university actually practiced toleration of objectionable speech in an even handed manner. but they don't. replace "jews" with "blacks," "gays," "transgendered" or any other group other than "straight, white, men" and see how differently the universities would react.

one has to ask then, what is it about The Jews is is different?

I think we know the answer.

Isn't this just shutting out even more speech in some twisted defense of free speech? Will ousting these worms open up the discourse at all or just teach that there are more boundaries?
