That's terrible. Hopefully he'll make it through.

AB, your title reminded me of that old video game, Gauntlet, where they say, "Valkyrie is about to die!".

I'm pretty sure only the press calls it "last Rights" anymore.

It's called "annointing of the sick" now. My dad had it several times back in December, and his heart is still beating.

That being said, it doesn't look too good for the Pope.

In my haste to spread more bad news I guess I could have spent a little more time on my thread title.

Maybe somebody accidently set the popes hat on fire, and rang the bell, and now they are about to make love with a hot chick in the vatican. Or something like that. But that only happens in the movies.

    Peace out Pope.

This news is undeniably unpopeular in the Catholic community.

at Easter they said he didn't go to the Mass and when they put him on tv it only showed him from behind so that had to mean things were getting pretty bad. having another Pope is gonna be weird with as long as he's been around.

It's too bad... but, in a way, what should we want? He has lived a long life of faithful service to the church and the whole world. He is old and has been in poor health for a long time, yet kept going with his job and helped as many people as possible. As much as we would all like to keep him forever, it's probably been very hard on him to continue through all that illness. We can't wish for him to suffer forever.

Whenever this does happen, prayers that the church will pick a worthy successor. (That's the part that always scares me a little.)

It doesn't necessarily mean he's going to die soon -- extreme unction can be given whenever someone is seriously ill, but I suspect that he is not long for this world. Regardless of your religion or even your feelings on Catholics, you can't deny that Pope John Paul II has been a great man. He's the only Pope in my lifetime, and looking back on the history of the Papacy, he's definitely been among the best as one of the more positive influences in the world.

edit: Apparently it's not called "extreme unction" any more -- found that surprising. I always thought it was a crummy name -- Annointing of the Sick is much better . . .

I think they make the popes change their names when they become pope. John Paul wasn't the current popes original name, if I remember correctly...

Popes get to select their names. John Paul was the previous Pope's name (the one who was veto'd by God). JP II thought the name was funky, so he kept it.

Plus they already had the letterhead all printed up.

He's had a long run. (i keep thinking of the MP sketch -- I'm not dead yet). I think he's been a good Pope.
