According to Chris Mannix of SI.com Let's be clear: Rockets looking for a STAR for T-Mac's salary; Otherwise they will take their $15 mill in cap space and bid on a FA about 3 hours ago from web Sammy D/Iggy for T-Mac? I keep hearing in Philly that the Sixers would need more. Umm, so wouldn't Houston about 3 hours ago from web http://twitter.com/chrismannixsi
I guess Mannix doesn't look at team salary info? That way I see it (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the Rockets are not getting any All Stars or near All Stars unless they either do it now by trading McGrady's salary or gut the roster in the off season to free up the money.
Trading Battier or Ariza for expiring contract + 1st round pick before the trade deadline, and buyout Tamc's contract after the dealine. The rockets would have enough salary space to sign a star player this offseason.
Why would the buy him out? That doesn't help the team at all (unless McGrady agrees to take substantially less) and it lets a competitor pick up McGrady without giving anything to the Rockets. If they can't trade him, you let him sit and have his contract expire. Morey has said they are philosophically against a buyout.
