Though I am not overly dissapointed with the Rocket's PG play thus far (pre-season and against Detroit), but we all know that this will be the weak link of the team that will lose a few games as is. There have many articles and previews, written about the team lately, that have mentioned that they need to do something to improve in this area of the roster. Even Bill Walton, during the broadcast of the China games, commented how he believes that neither Ward or Lue would be the starting PG by the end of the season, hinting that the Rockets were going to make a trade at some point. But who? I just don't see many good options out there for the team to acquire. Gary Payton (Boston) If the Rockets were really interested, wouldn't there have been a deal already considering all that went on with him this summer? Jason Kidd (New Jersey) Rockets don't have anything that the Nets would want in return. Plus, he is coming off that injury. Jeff McInnis/Eric Snow (Cleveland) Again, if there was a deal that could be had, wouldn't it be done already? Neither is a good 3pt shooter. Jamaal Tinsley (Indiana) Has been in & out of the dog house there but, with just signing an extension, he may be untradeable. Especially for what the Rockets would be offering. Jason Terry (Dallas) Just got beat out by Devin Harris, the rookie, so maybe they would consider trading him. But, then again, what do the Rox have that Dallas would want in return, and is Terry a JVG-type player? Sam Cassell (Minnesota) He is a contract dispute with the Wolves and they have Hudson. And, again, would the Wolves want what the Rox have? Damon Stoudamire/Nick Van Exel (Portland) Would either really fit well on the team? Antonio Daniels (Seattle) Nice all around PG but and the Rox were interested in getting him this summer. But, if Seattle was willing to trade him, wouldn't they have already? Marko Jaric (LA Clippers) May be a good fit on the team as he is an athletic, tall point who is a good outside shooter. Is on the last year of contract. These are just some guys I thought maybe the Rockets would be interested in, but all of them either look like we don't have what it takes to trade for them, or they wouldn't be a player that JVG would want running his system. Any thoughts to who the Rockets will go after and/or acquire this season to fill this hole?
OK, this is a pet peeve of mine when people suggest him; he's a mediocre shooter at best, is lead footed and by no means athletic (and is a lousy defender, due in part to such) However, he is relatively tall and on the last year of his contract; but then again Manute Bol is tall...
I wouldnt mind either Damon S. or Nick van axel. They can both dish and hit the 3 ball. Both have huge salaries, but they end soon, and both could be available soon.....
Damon's contract ends after this season, and Van Exel's after next. But, can you see either being a player that JVG would want running his system? For some reason, I don't. But, that is just me.
Actually i dont see why not. NVE knows how to win, can maybe even pass some clutch on to TMAC or Yao. And Damon has a LOT of playoff games, and close ones, under his belt.......
I see your point, and Damon's expiring contract is a positive, but it just seems both have too much of a scoring mentality to play PG for this team.
u gotta remember, there are not too many pgs who are not scoring mentality but still effective......but both avg about 7 dimes regularly, and both have played on teams w/ good systems......
True. Again, I see your point but I just have a hard time invisioning either on this team. Hey Dude, good stuff.
thanks, and i can see why either would struggle, especially Damon, under JVG. Damon i think is one of the better fast break players in the NBA, but he could struggle in JVG offense......but then again, if we keep disregarding players w/ good game because they wouldnt fit 'our system', then maybe the more concern is JVG.....and i gotta say, i have my share of concern w/ him.......
Yes i was thinking the same thing to myself earlier. I remember people were wondering if even Tmac would fit in. A good coach finds the strengths of all the players and learns how to exploit them. Not just set up a system from 10 years ago, and just tell the players to adjust.
