I posted this in the RNC thread.... All in all, not a bad speech. I realize on an overwhelmingly liberal board like this with only a handful of decent, objective posters it's hard to get anybody to think rationally. Not saying she hit this out of the park like I was hoping she would but she delivered where she needed to deliver: 1) The lengthy "hockey mom" first part of the speech where she touted her family and essentially introduced herself to the nation. 2) Established her "niche" with her passionate beliefs regarding energy, oil and hopes for energy independence. 3) The traditional "VP attack dog" role where she used the crowd pumping one-liners against Obama. 4) Touted McCain's leadership and readiness to be President over somebody who seeks the Presidency on a mission of "personal discovery". That's the message the GOP and McCain camp wanted her to deliver. To her credit, she looked very poised and up to the challenge. I disagree with the posters here saying she looked in over her head. Like I said, it wasn't a home run but it was more than adequate. You Dems just have to keep in mind Hillary sets the public speaking bar pretty high. Palin is not the orator Hillary is but that still doesn't mean this wasn't a good speech.
She hit a grand slam there....it was incredible. She is someone to reckon with and I have to believe the Dems are concerned if not fearful. This election is now on.............
I think when people break it down she will get killed for it. She lied about the bridge to nowhere, she lied about earmarked spending....and clearly she is a hockey mom and McCain was a POW. I like the part about selling the plane and firing the personal chef.....but as VP, she has zero power to effect change in spending. DD
There were times it was laughable, and ridiculous and incredibly far removed from substance and issues. I mean the part about her busband being a champion snowmobiler was just laughable and ridiculous. She was effective in hitting the key values of family and patriotism that the GOP base loves. She wanted to portray herself as regular PTA hockey-mom. She did that, but by doing that and showing how authentic she was at being a PTA hockey-mom, she simultaneously raised a lot of questions about whether an average small town PTA hockey-mom is ready to be a heartbeat away from the most powerful leadership position in the world.
i thought it was awesome. i have a family. guess what? she has a family too!!!! she's like me! i wanna vote for mcain now, not some elitist who is way smarter than me. i can relate.
I hope you are being sarcastic. The last thing I want in the whitehouse is a simpleton running this country. I want someone savvy and smart enough to handle adversity and shades of gray. Doesn't Obama have a family? DD
I really liked the speech, she is a cool lady and tough. I don't know, after the last week of speculation about her and her family i don't think she could have performed any better. The pundits were all praises and their only criticism was that maybe she came off as harsh. Screw that, I want harsh, I want someone who has some gusto and grit. I for one am tired of the way the political machine is run in this country and for the first time I am of the opinion that there might be a chance for positive change in DC.
I thought her delivery was terrible becuase her timing was lousy and her voice grating. But then the only speech I've seen recently is Obama so I guess everybody will look bad next to that. The substance aside from the mom dad apple pie bit which i thought was very fake, was standard GOP talking points "dems raise taxes small government ra ra" That message is so divorced from historical reality I just can't objectively listen to it anymore.
I think I figured it out. Everyone thought that Palin's speach was so good because she followed Rudy who gave maybe the worst speaking experience ever in the history of politics*. *Excludes any speach by George W. Bush.
Can you cool it with the hyperbole already? I've been reading your posts on here for years and this is the only time i've found you to be intolerable. You've littered the D&D with your exaggerations and biased comments all night. Ironic that you're jumping around from thread to thread claiming a lack of substance from Palin's speech when your posts are all exaggerations that sound like a middle school kid mustered up.
Shades of gray??? Obama is nothing but gray, he has no opinion or core belief on any of the issues and he has proven that based on the constant swaying of his own stances. Some on this board will call it amiable but come on, how many people do you trust in your everyday life that blurt out their opinion, go study the facts and then come to the correct conclusion. The fact that people are excepting this from a possible presidential candidate is ludicrous.
I would have to say that she has been faced with her fair share of adversity. So are you implying that if you are from a small town that you are simpleton? I would rather have a "simpleton", as you put it, than a shyster in the white house.
No problem. She confirmed my low expectations and sucked really badly at reading for a newscaster (tho the crowd kept fing her up). I had also never heard her voice before, it was very shrill. It makes Hillary sound like Lena Horne.
no... he has stated his position several times, then studied the reality and consequence of his stance, mostly politically driven, and then changed his position. Sorry, I tried to put it in everyday terms. Should have been more straight forward.
I want someone intelligent enough to run a country that doesn't look at everything in black and white, that can work WITH foreign countries to keep our borders safe, and not just with over the top military might. I want a leader that believes in his/her convictions that most match mine. And above all, I want someone I can trust. Palin got earmarks....now opposes them. Palin wanted the Bridge to nowhere, now opposes it. Palin is under investigation for abuse of power.....bad mojo there. And 9 VPs have taken over for the President due to death or resignation, that is about 20%......with McCain being 72, I do not want someone who is best known as a Soccer Mom as the next in line. DD
What I put in the RNC thread: She did what she was supposed to do; you have to give her credit for a great delivery, and hitting on all the buttons the audience in front of her wants to hear. I agree it was light on any actual substance, but I'm not sure I expected that from Palin anyway. That's what I want to hear from McCain. Palin's role was just to cheerlead and throw out some attacks. She was supposed to work her audience - who after this last week, wanted desperately to have something to scream about - into a frenzy, and on that she was successful. There's no denying that she looked poised and in control. Considering what's been happening lately that at least goes a long way. Rudy's, however, was crap. He was put out there for nothing more than dumb attack mode, and it was disgusting. I am glad his bid for President never went further than it did.
