All academy members are allowed to vote for best-picture nominees. The full academy also is eligible to vote in all categories for the awards themselves. Director Blake Edwards, whose films include "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "Victor/Victoria," "Days of Wine and Roses" and "The Pink Panther" movies, will receive an honorary Oscar for career achievement. The Academy Awards will be handed out February 29 from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California. Billy Crystal returns as host of the show. The Oscar telecast will air on ABC. See the nominations here. Oh, wait! Let me just say that all nominations for Last Samurai, Cold Mountain, and Mystic River =
At least Blake Edwards is getting a lifetime achievement award. Very well deserved. Other than that, I doubt I will watch any of it.
I have never got into watching the Oscars, but I would like to see Diane Keaton win the best actress award because I did enjoy her performance in "Something's Gotta Give". She probably won't win though, since I am pulling for her.
It's a bad year for movies when Master and Commander gets a best picture nomination. I'm glad to see Lost in Translation get some recognition though, it was excellent.
All my love to "lost in translation". That movie hit me in all aspects. It made me fall in love with something not defined. Bill Murray is a long time favourite of mine and Sophia Coppola has my props since the "virgin suicides". It seems that she has a very good hand for the soundtracks of their movies too. The soundtrack for "lost in translation" and "the virgin suicides" are both excellent. And then there is Scarlett Johannson which I really like since her appearance in "Ghost World", which is one of my all time favourites, which also has an excellent soundtrack itself. All three soundtracks are worth buying especially "ghost world" is a gem among others. Very old and fantastic blues songs on it. Please someone check it out and shares his love for this one.
saw Mistake River yesterday. God it was boring. Sean Penn was OK until the end But Tim Robbins and Marcia Gay Harden were annoying and don't deserve nominations. Sean Astin and Ian McKellan were robbed.
I agree. I have yet to understand the hype behind this movie. It was completely predictable and the performances were so over the top. Robbins getting nominated is a complete joke.
no sean astin for best supporting Actor, I boycott the Oscars! boooo, boooo I tell you. Samwise Baggins was the best character in a while and astin gets nothing. booooooo
Hmm...I totally disagree with some of you about Mystic River. I thought the acting was intense and top-notch...just like the movie. I think it deserved everything it got. Master and Commander, on the other hand...yeah, it was a weak year for movies. other comments... - glad the whale rider girl got nominated. - don't know why jude law got nominated...he's a great actor, but his character was just dull. - still don't understand the hype about Lost in Translation, maybe other people just relate to it...not I.
But you relate to Hobbits and Elves? *****SPOILERS******** I agree that Mystic River was intense, but I had it figured out too early. First off, I knew it would be too simple to have Tim Robbins' character be the murderer. Then, once I figured out who it really was, it was just a stupid conclusion anyway. It should've been a random murder rather than some mute kid who didn't want his brother to leave. Both Robbins' and Harden's accents were terribly over the top. Also, what was with Laura Linney's transformation at the end when she turned all evil and what not? Ugh, the more I type about it, the more I really didn't like that movie. Sean Penn's performance was the only good thing about it.
I wonder how peeved Nomar is right now The Last Samurai - his guarentee as the Best Picture didn't even get a nod for Best Pic But it is good to see Ken Wantabe get a nod as I thought his performance was awsome I really don't see how ROTK won't win Best Pic up against that competition, its a gimmie! But of course I thought that about Saving Private Ryan a few years ago also and was left speechless after that POS film Shakespeare in Love won
I'm glad the girl from Whale Rider was nominated. She was phenomenal. Seabiscuit for best movie? I enjoyed the flick, but it wasn't that good. Also glad to see the guy from Last Samurai get nominated.
Good to see a few surprises in the nominees (guess I have to go see "In America" now, and still want to see "House of Sand and Fog"). Some sure-fire nominees didn't get in (Nicole Kidman, although, to be sure, her performance was not one of the five best of the year). "Seabiscuit" really stole some nominations, though. I liked it, but it was a good movie striving to be great. Four stars in corniness and ham-handed directing. A few of the race scenes were awesome, though. "LOTR" will take picture and director and its technical categories. In any other year "Lost in Translation" and Sofia Coppola would win. Sean Penn has the edge on Bill Murray, but Bill might have gained some momentum lately. Marcia Gay Harden absolutely deserved to be in there, she was as good as Sean Penn and Tim Robbins, and those guys will probably take the statue home. Funny thing about "Master and Commander." I liked it a lot. And yet after I saw it once, that's all I needed. My favorite nominee? Gotta be Johnny Depp. You go, boy. His drunken-drag-queen-Keith-Richards pirate was too much fun to ignore.
Maybe Kidman wasn't nominated because they realized they gave it to her for such a God-awful movie/performance last year.
man, Depp winning for Pirates would be great. i thought it would be a stupid movie when i first saw trailers for it, but it was one of the most enjoyalbe movies i've seen in a long time (LOTR: ROTK notwithstanding) and Sparrow was the main reason why. even though i didn't see it, i wouldn't mind murray winning just b/c i've liked him in so many things. LOTR better win best picture. and Sean Astin, first robbed after his performance in Encino Man, and now this. that's gotta be rough.
Hard to believe that Miramax didn't get anything nominated for Best Picture. Even when they don't have all that great of a movie, they usually still get something nominated. I guess the Miramax marketing machine isn't what it used to be, at least in terms of the Oscar nominations.
Well, I was a short boy in my younger days, so I can definitely identify with the hobbits' struggle. LOTR is a fantasy movie! You don't need to identify with it! As far as Mystic River, guess we'll just have to disagree. Although, I didn't like it so much for the plot as for what I deemed the flawless interactions between the characters and the way the actors played those scenes. To me, that was the focus of movie more than providing a complex plot.
