    Palo Alto

Good band out of SoCal. Early Radiohead vibe, but rocks a little more. Check out their self-titled debut, probably at your local record store (not a national chain).

Ah, i know about them, drewdog.

I like O.A.R (of a revolution). I liked them 2 years ago, and nobody had heard of them. Now it seems they've gained a bit of recognition at colleges, but nowhere else.

This band, imo, is illustrative of why napster is good for small artists. I downloaded a song of theirs at a whim, and now own all their albums. Take that, jeff, etc!

Beware the Green Monkey, a Manchester band in the early 90s...they were awesome.

Deconstruction - Dave Navarro and Eric Avery's post-Jane's Addiction band. Made one album then Dave sold out and joined the RHCP while Eric Avery faded into the musical underground.

Goldfrapp - Great new singer whose music is akin to Portishead but less hammy and even more cinematic

Astronaut's Wife - not a great band, but they sing really cool harmonies over very dreamy synth parts

Are you sure Palo Alto is from SoCal, because thats a city in northern California. Actually its the city that Stanford is in. Anyhow my favorite band that nobody knows about is my friends band 10-High. He was originally from H-town but now lives in Jacksonville, they just signed a deal with United Artists or whatever record label they signed with. He promised me that I get a secret track on the album if they ever go big.

how about The one band you THINK know one else knows about?

Starsailor... you may have seen their video on MTV. I call it Mood Music, kinda low vocals, a little depressing, sort of like Coldplay and Travis. Here's a temporary link to a Starsailor MP3
    http://www.groovehouse.org/temp/fever.mp3

Alpha - Ambient electronic with haunting vocals

Moonraker - Portishead type downtempo with a slight jazzy feel, band has a female vocalist. Here's a temporary link to a Moonraker song... http://www.groovehouse.org/temp/organiclove.mp3

to rococco rot & i-sound - ambient techno, instrumental stuff.
    here's a temp link to a song...

MP3 links can be copied into your URL option in Winamp or you can click on it and it should download?

used to be Ben Harper, but the cat's been out of the bag on him for about half a decade now.

<I'm just stoked because he's reuniting with oliver charles, the original Innocent Criminal drummer! . . but I digess>

now, I'd say it would have to be either:

    Old 97s -- dallas' own alt-country barnburners/pop maestros

    or

Pedro the Lion -- the most depressing "Christian" music you'll ever hear. . . NOT Shine, Jesus, Shine.

as far as recommendations for these two acts, there are only two places to start:

Old 97s -- Too Far To Care
Pedro the Lion -- Winners Never Quit

drewdog, I keep hearing about Palo Alto. I need to check them out.

p.s. oh yeah!! The lower Frequencies. NOBODY's heard of them. <they're my band>

Wow, this is a tough question but I will have to go with the following:

Rose Chronicles - No longer together, they featured vocalist Kristy Thirsk who has sang on some Delerium tracks.

Single Gun Theory - Australian group featuring vocalist Jacqui Hunt who sang "Euphoria (Firefly)" on "Karma" by Delerium.

David Lyndon Huff - Did a CD called "Worldbeat", very similar to Enigma.

Polygon Window - One of Richard James' aliases over the years.

Download - Run by cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy, they are a fierce IDM group.

Finally, I'll say Front Line Assembly, which was one of the top Industrial Dance acts out there. I'm guessing though that someone has heard of all of these people.

Good band...I have their first 2 CDs, Dummy and Portishead. Dummy is better, IMO. Beth Gibbons is a great singer.

    Chievous:

I'm not surprised that you have heard of SGT. They are pretty amazing, IMO, and deserve more recognition here in the US. However, I don't even know if they are still together.

Pavement- they broke up a couple years ago, but they were kind of like the American Travis or Coldplay. I still listen to their CD "Terror Twilight" all the time, and "Spit on a Stranger" is one of my favorite songs ever. Lead singer Steven Malkmus has a new CD out. Its pretty good too.
