Premieres tonight at 9. Some things I'd like to see discussed: -The Axl Rose v. Vince Neil thing -The Steven Adler convulsing-on-the-floor-of-a-bathroom-banging-his-head-into-the-tile-uncontrollably-until he almost killed himself incident -Why the Axl Rose solo band still calls themselves G'nfn'R, and who the stupid lawyers for Slash/Duff/Izzy were that allowed this to happen -What Axl Rose thinks of RocketmanTex -How much Tracii Guns contributed to AfD -How Axl ripped his image/moves from Michael Monroe For OPENERS ...
I love that Vh1 does that. They say the premiere is at night, but they end up showing it in the morning. I've seen them do that quite a few times.
This is an underrated experience and one that I highly recommend if you haven't already tried it. I have to go now, for an unrelated reason.
Guns 'N' Roses along with the Rolling Stones are two bands that I have never been able to get into. I recognize the fact that they are very good bands, but I have always felt that both of them were overrated.
Axl is very high up there in the "insance musicians" pantheon. Somewhere between Courtney Love and Michael Jackson. In honor of this (low-quality) documentary, I'm gonna pop in my GNR Live in Tokyo DVD. Where's Izzy?
BTM never mentioned it. But the story behind that was Vince thought Izzy was flirting/hitting on his then wife. So at an MTV VMA, Vince waited backstage in the dark for Izzy. As Izzy came offstage, still blinded by the bright lights, Vince jumped up, and sucked punched Izzy, then ran out the backdoor to a waiting limo. Axl then publicly called him out, and you know the rest. This was one of many things Adler did in his days with Guns. Besides from his drug habit, which stalled UYI forever, he almost got Duff killed by his drug dealers. There's nothing the lawyers can do. The only thing happening now is there's a lawsuit against Axl re: rights to the songs. Axl has declined the use of some GNR songs in such movies as The Wedding Planner and Black Hawk Down. Which is fine by me, we don't need another Rolling Stones type exploitation of music. Slash and Duff are asking for a million dollars in lost funds. Whatever. His biggest contribution to Guns was the song, Back Off b****. Although he has played on some tribute albums post-Slash GNR. Axl and Monroe were great friends. Axl credits a lot of his influence to Micheal Monroe. Axl has said on many occasions, that Hanoi Rocks is one of the greatest bands ever. As a matter of fact, Monroe plays on Bad Obsession.
they actually showed it a day before the "premeire" on sunday morning. one of my favorite bands of all time but it seems like they broke up at the right time. didn't slash say that axl was trying to go real soft, i thought i read that somewhere. anyways the velvet revolver cd kicks ass.
Well, that's one version. The one Neil tells (most notably in "The Dirt"- AWESOME book) is that a megadrunk Izzy had acted violently toward his girlfriend at a club on the Strip. Neil felt he had "helped" GnR early in their career and felt betrayed, so he sucker punched Izzy at the awards show like you said. Neil says that after he dropped Izzy, Axl confronted him, Neil challenged him and Axl backed off with something like, "Just don't mess with my band, man!" I love both groups so I don't particularly care which version is right. But I tend to believe the Neil version and believe without a doubt that although Axl was probably in better shape than Vince, he would have gotten his ass kicked badly if they'd fought. Axl was well-known to be either fearless or so egomaniacal that he believed himself nearly impervious to harm, depending on how one views him on the whole. The jumping-into-the-crowd-after-the-fan incident is one example of his behavior. But all of Motley Crue (with the notable exception of Mick Mars) were constantly in fights back in their Strip days, fighting with everyone from cowboys to fans to cops. They liked to wear makeup, but they were tough. Plus, of course, even Axl wasn't as big of a boozer as Vince Neil. Axl may have worshipped Hanoi Rocks, but Neil's the only guy to have killed one. I could talk about this crap for days.
Don't you like Celine Dion? Thanks for posting this Freak. I've been getting my 80's/90's hard rock/metal fix from VH1 lately. Did anyone catch the 100 greatest moments in metal a couple of weeks back? That stuff was great.
I remember seeing that they both yapped to eachother on tv. They'd show Vince saying stuff like "Axl, anyplace, anytime" and showing Axl making fun of vince saying that he had a clean shot but he hit Izzy like a powder puff.
Hey coma, I already knew most of that- I was just wondering if they'd cover any of it. Also, I saw somewhere where someone claimed (possibly one of his LA Guns bandmates, I don't know) that Tracii Guns was responsible for most of the guitar work for AfD. I found it hard to believe, but I'll see if I can find that. Tex- I thought I remembered you saying you had some history w/Rose back in the 80s on the Sunset Strip ... that's true, right?
That's the first time I've heard of that. His only contributions I know of are some of the lyrics to Back Off b****, and the Guns part of Guns N' Roses.
Did Neil mention how he helped out GNR? I'm curious, I've never heard if this before. The most noticable link between the two bands is with Nikki Sixx, who had his life saved by Slash. Obviously, I disagree! Axl got into plenty of fights himself prior to moving to LA, and while he was in LA. Either way, that whole incident was dumb. Nothing sadder than two rail thin (at the time) egomaniacal musicians calling each other out on TV. That's cold stuff about him killing Razzle. Also, if he was so tough, why'd he sucker punch Izzy and then run away? And according to Tom Petty, who witnessed the incident, it didn't even knock Izzy down! SAME HERE!
There aren't many details. I met him at a party in 1987. I spent 5 minutes at the most talking to him. He was brash, arrogant, stand-off-ish, and egotistical, but he was surrounded by some very fine ladies. He came off exactly how you would expect.
